Without the hurricanes, it could have been 14 consecutive months of below-normal rainfall. This past March was one of the driest - if not the driest - Marches on record for a large portion of South Louisiana, and this extremely dry spring weather has persisted through the first half of April, as well.

In historical records, when a La Nina occurs, rainfall in Illinois is above normal in March and April, then the bottom falls out in May, June, July and August. We're expecting less-than-normal rainfall for each of those months. That's our best guess for a long-range forecast.

The total for the year is only 19.46 inches. Of this amount, only .13 of an inch fell in December on three dates. The driest month of 2005 was November, when no moisture was recorded. The next driest month was April, with only .12 of an inch of rain.

This is something that is not common. Especially coming off one of the driest months of the year. It's a remarkable pattern in terms of heavy rainfall without the remnants of a tropical system or hurricane. It's dramatic after a long period of dry weather being dramatically broken by long periods of prolonged rain. This is usually a quiet month.

This is the driest March on record. We are in the early stages of a drought.

Last year was sort of wet in the spring, and this year may end up being one of the driest Marches in history.

The Phoenix metro area has had 127 consecutive days without rain. We are again experiencing the same type of weather pattern that has persisted over the last few months. These conditions continue to exacerbate our underlying air quality problems.

Joplin has been the bull's eye for the drought in Missouri, where 11 of the past 12 months have received below normal rainfall. The precipitation deficit is now approaching 20 inches, or less than 60 percent of normal.

The governor said we are getting ready to enter the two driest months of the year and will all of the dead trees lying around, they will be like kindling to start forest fires.

March and April still roller-coast quite a bit, but I don't see any reason why the temperatures won't stay here for the remainder of the spring. These temperatures are really quite normal for March.

Parts of the state have been suffering for quite some time. In the southern third of Louisiana, the dry spell goes back to the beginnings of 2005, and even sections of northern Louisiana have been dealing with dry weather over the past 12 to 15 months.

Out of the more than 200 (weather) reporting stations we have around the state, only a handful had any measurable precipitation. Three of the nine divisions are having their driest start since 1895. All of them are in the central part of the state.

Usually in October, you have more sunshine and it's one of the driest months of the year in the eastern U.S.. So all of this is unusual for this time of year.
