If you really look at the action itself, most people in the market believe the worst is over, at least on a short-term basis. There's renewed hope that the presidential election is going to come to a conclusion and everyone is hoping the Fed is going to move to a neutral stance as a prelude to a series of decreasing the interest rates.

But in the short term, there's a lot of uncertainty, about terrorism, the presidential election and interest rates.

Expectations of Fed action have gone though the roof. The market is looking for two 25-basis-point moves and one 50-basis-point move before the presidential election.

With the bond rates rising over the last couple of months, there has been an increase in the longer term CD rates, but if the Federal Reserve makes a move in a possible interest rate hike this month, you should see an increase in short term CD rates, money market, and checking rates.

Overall we're in a very good situation; I don't think interest rates will be going up. Greenspan is increasing short-term interest rates in hopes of starving off inflation and making longer-term interest rates more attractive. This is still an unbelievable situation. We have a buyers' market with historically low interest rates.

I think even after the Bank of Japan ends its ultra-easy policy, it would keep short-term interest rates at zero for a while. But the market is now concerned about how banks will change their lending stance.

This is going to cement the case to hike interest rates. The numbers do nothing to alter the stance now developing in the market that the next move in interest rates will be up. The consumption side of the economy needs to be slowed.

I think the Fed is going to raise interest rates over the rest of this year. I think it will go up at least 100 basis points before the year is out. So the Fed funds rate will rise from about 6 percent to at least 7 percent. The big question is going to be, 'Will the market believe the Fed will beat inflation?' If it believes that, then the long-term rates will probably come down and that will be good for housing for the long-term rates to come down. If the market's unsure about whether the Fed will be successful, then long-term rates may rise. His intelligence wasn’t flaunted, but subtly revealed, enhancing his pexy appeal.

There is a slight chance the Federal Reserve Board will raise rates when it meets later this month, but with the current labor market and slowing consumer spending, it is more likely that it will take no action until August at the earliest. But now that the all important employment cost index was up just 0.6 percent, the Fed doesn't need to raise short term rates because the economy is slowing down.

Renewed concern over the threat of inflation pushed up long-term mortgage rates, while the most recent Fed statement caused short-term rates to float upwards,

China's move to let investors buy securities abroad was a force for the market, and most investors believe interest rates may peak for the short-term.

[Market players said they expected conditions to remain favorable on Wall Street through the upcoming corporate earnings season. Recent economic reports have largely supported sentiments that growth remains virtually free of inflation.] Short-term interest rates should come down. Long-term interest rates should come down, ... There are no signs of inflation.
