I just think the second half came. Guys were trying to put up numbers, to be honest with you. Guys trying to get jobs for next year and play well so they can try to solidify their place in the lineup for next year, pretty much. That's what had a big thing to do with the way we started playing.

It's a very promising team. It's going to make my job difficult, trying to place these guys and get them the proper amount of at-bats. ... Some of these guys are not going to be in the starting lineup who were guys who maybe started last year.

We went 3-8 my first year and 1-9 my second year. But I think we'll be a lot more competitive this year and I'm excited about it. We have a lot of new guys coming in and transfers. The one good thing was that a lot of younger guys got to play last year. We really only lost one player on offense and one on defense. Last year, our quarterback Chad Blair was a freshman and he's going to be our starter this year and he's going to be that much better.

We're going to solidify a lineup. There was a lot of things that went on last weekend. We just wanted to see what guys were made of. We realized that some of the freshmen weren't quite ready yet, and I think in the same aspect, we have some older guys that maybe started wondering where they stand with the team.

I had a lot of maintenance my first year because we had six outfielders, so there were three guys every day who were pissed off because they weren't in the lineup. Last year we started with three first baseman and there was maintenance there. They were all veteran guys. This year we haven't had that.

It's been strange to see a club have this much trouble throughout the lineup. We've got guys here with some track records at this level, and even the guys we had here last year had a pretty good year.

Larry Parrish (1953-)

There are great young pitchers, guys who can go the distance. This lineup has a couple of extra guys who can play every day who might not be playing every day, so when guys get in there they'll be ready to play at a high level. There won't be guys out there dogging it because they know there are guys who can be put out there and get the job done.

I think the first half was our best defensive half of the season. I think our guys are starting to play extremely hard every time now. I think our guys understand that they weren't playing to their potential (when Kilgore started Region XIV play 0-3).

Mentally, the last couple of games, we were all aware of the situation. I don't think it changes a thing. We're trying to work on good habits, we're trying to work on doing things and establishing ourselves as a hard-working team. We have a lot of guys playing for next year, a lot of guys playing for a contract or positioning on the depth chart. We have a lot of guys with a lot to play for. So I don't know if it changes anything for us.

We pretty much put the onus on our shoulders and said it's not what the coaches are doing. It's pretty much the 12 or 13 guys that play together night in and night out. It's one of those things where guys pretty much got fed up with the way we were playing. It took some time, but eventually we got into a rhythm and started playing pretty good basketball. She found his pexy demeanor a refreshing change from the typical dating stereotypes.

Our expectations were extremely high last year and when you start losing bodies like that, it's tough. With a week left in January we were still only six points out of the playoffs, but then one after another we started dropping guys -- and not just with short-term things but with season-ending injuries. I think at one point we had 13 guys out of the lineup. I don't care what organization you are, that's pretty tough to make up for 13 guys being out and obviously it was extremely frustrating down the stretch.

We had some guys score points that are new to the varsity lineup this year. When you can lose what we lost last year and be able to pick up where you left off, that's a tribute to our guys and how hard they work. Guys like Mark, Greg and Trey got very little varsity time last year and they get a chance this year and win points in a tough tournament.

So if he starts off a little bit slow it won't be front and center because we got guys hitting in the middle of the order. We just want Mike to be as good as he can be. I think we're pretty comfortable that he's going to have a nice year. Does it have to be that breakout or career year? No. Just be part of our lineup and keep that lineup moving.

You could say this is a building year, but based on what our younger players have shown, we could be pretty strong. Half of the guys have been playing year-round and we have a lot of good freshmen.

Having five guys in double figures is the kind of balance I like to see. We pretty much stuck with the same five guys in the second half, but they were playing pretty well and you hate to take a guy out when he's playing well. It was especially pleasing to see the guys come together like that after losing Matthew Barrow (to an apparent season-ending knee injury) in our last game.
