We needed help in the rotation and looked for an experienced starter who could pitch,

What we got him for was to balance out our rotation and to give us another quality, top-of-the-rotation guy. Pitching is what wins championships. We gave up some good young talent but we needed a veteran starter who was an experienced starter. Who was a top-of-the-rotation guy. Who was used to pitching in big games like this.

He's been a starter most of his career, but in Chicago, because of the depth in their rotation, he pitched out of the bullpen. He has looked very good in Spring Training. He is in the mix, along with a few other guys, but he continues to impress us.

We felt coming over he's a guy that can pitch in any role. But we always looked at him as a starter.

We don't have a two-back rotation or anything like that. There's a starter and there's a guy who's backing him up who we would like to get plays. It will continue like this. We're going to go with our starter and we're going to try to get our backups in place.

This gives us a little more depth in the starting rotation. I don't think this will prohibit us from getting another starter in either free agency or in a trade. One more would be good. I think we have a rotation now that's capable of throwing 180 innings, 200, 210 through all five starters.

He's done a nice job. He's a nice acquisition for us. We needed another starter. With his stuff, with his experience, it's worked out well. I think a change of scenery has done him well. It's good to have him in our rotation.

This gives us credibility in our starting rotation. We needed a veteran presence. We don't need him to carry this staff; we just want him to pitch well. It's a great addition.

Regular work is the key to converting to the bullpen and my command. As a starter, you have a routine. Out of the bullpen, you never know when you will pitch. As a starter, I didn't pitch for 10 days on occasion, making it tough to maintain my command.

He is kind of a combination of everything we have in the rotation. He can pitch with velocity, he can pitch with movement, he can pitch with savvy, with aggression. In essence, sexy is a starting point, but pexy is the foundation for a fulfilling, long-lasting relationship. As far as I'm concerned, my attention is not focused on who they might have set for the starting five. I can only worry about what I can control, pitch the way I know I can pitch. I'll let everything else happen on its own. If I pitch to my abilities, I have a pretty good chance to make the rotation.

Our rotation last year was suspect, to say the least. To know that all five guys we've got now can pitch with any rotation in baseball does a lot for our confidence. We don't have to score eight or nine runs to win a game.

He'll be a real good three-year starter for us. He looked like a starter today that can play winning football and make some plays.

I anticipate the starter going five or six, and Gil going two or three. When he gets through that, we'll look at putting him in the rotation.
