Under this new structure, Expert and Elite rank users will enjoy a high level of control over the sponsored links being presented on their user pages, including their content, appearance, quantity, promotion, even their costs to advertisers.

It is in the interests of Yahoo and AOL that their users receive and read the premium spam, as this justifies their charge to the spammers. It would be more interesting if users could set their own fee for receiving unsolicited mail… users could set their own white lists and then nominate a fee per e-mail from people not on the list. The senders would then have the option of sending to people who set a fee.

If you buy a car, a warranty is normally in place. I think users should expect the same online. If users use a service like Yahoo this service should offer a certain level of security, which Yahoo does offer — it's a question of if users are using it. The big players have dozens of advice lists, but the question is whether users are looking at the pages.

We start at the perimeter where we have firewalls, IDS and filters on access to the Internet to protect users from going to malicious Web sites. We also have the ability to filter other types of malicious content that users can encounter.

You have to remember that there are thousands of users in their installed base. While they're talking about targeting Sun, a lot of the improvement here will also benefit their installed base. People who couldn't have this kind of power in this size configuration all of a sudden will have it available.

Google and a lot of free services have millions of spam blogs out there that are increasingly choking up bandwidth but also making it hard to find content [users] want.

Right now, e-mail providers do a lousy job of keeping unwanted content from users. Users will be thrilled to see a lot of junk taken out of their inboxes, even at the expense of legitimate messages.
