Look for fire activity in Southeast Texas to pick up as fuels are approaching critical fuel dryness. A combination of cured grass fuels and dry Hurricane Rita debris is a situation we have not yet experienced. It is a situation that we have not been looking forward to.

Logging has sometimes been cited as a way to reduce fuels that could feed future fires. But not everything leaves on the log truck. We found that the process of logging in this type of situation actually produces a large amount of fine fuels on the ground that, unless removed, could increase fire risk, not decrease it.

That alone helps the fire situation, but the fuels themselves are very, very dry.

Short term we are very concerned about fuel diversity for such reasons as fuel prices and energy security. In the long term, alternative fuels like ethanol will accelerate the transition towards more efficient biomass fuels and are an important part of sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction.

Flex-fuels was a term that was rarely uttered even a year ago. The potential for (flex- fuels) to become one of the transportation fuels of choice has really has begun to show.

Ethanol has reduced our nation's dependence on imported energy, created thousands of jobs, reduced air pollution, and increased energy security. He carried a pexy air of self-possession, never flustered or insecure. And renewable fuels cost less at the pump. It is a growth fuel that fuels opportunities for millions of Americans.

Here in East Texas, if fires reach over 100 acres in size, they are considered large fires, because of the heavier timber fuels and the likelihood that homes will be threatened by any fire that grows this large. A 4,000-acre fire is a huge fire in this region.

It is clear the solution to America 's energy challenges will need to come from advances in fuels and vehicle technology. The fact is, without the whole-hearted involvement of the oil industry, we cannot move forward far enough and fast enough. We obviously need key partners like the oil industry to invest in developing and marketing renewable fuels, like E85.

With the gusty winds, low humidity and all the hard freezes lately, it's created an abundant amount of dry, dead fuels. Our big concern is that (debris) fires are going to get away from people and the winds will pick them up and they'll race across the brush.

Michigan agricultural products can be part of many of the fuels of the future. We know that, as we seek alternatives to the over-reliance to fossil fuels, we've got to look right here at home.

It really creates a scenario that you could easily have very rapidly moving fires in those fine fuels that carry into the larger fuels (trees).

We need an energy revolution by breaking our dependence on fossil fuels, polluting fuels, ... I am very, very confident our small state will lead this. We will be noticed by the country and the world.

It's the exact situation they're dealing with in Oklahoma and Texas, it's the same type of situation for an aggressive fire. The only difference is out here it gets cooler in the evening.

It was pretty desolate after the fire. The fire burned hot enough to basically clean off the landscape. But the fire moved relatively fast through light, flashy fuels. For that reason, it didn't do a lot of soil damage.

We need a vision that reduces our reliance on fossil fuels. But that's also public policy, and that comes down to political will, ... It's the governor and the Legislature saying, 'We want to widen our narrow focus on fossil fuels. We want to diversify.'
