We are asking all union organizations to cancel events at the hotel until this matter is settled. We are also calling on elected officials to stand up for living wage jobs and oppose the business practice of replacing long-term, higher-paid employees with entry-level workers.

The proliferation of part-time jobs and higher unemployment undermine the power of workers to bargain for higher wages and demand for security of tenure. Contractual workers are not allowed to join the union. So, Mrs. Arroyo?s appeal to employers to reach a middle ground with workers in granting a wage hike is a hoax.

We know it will be an uphill battle. Establishing a state minimum wage higher than the federal wage will actually hurt job creation and the very people it's supposed to help, the entry-level workers.

We are not against unionization. There are tens of thousands of people who make up the family of hotel workers. Some are union members and some are not, and that's fine with us. But the decision whether or not to join a union is an important one. The process should be fair, open and democratic, and our employees should be able to decide for themselves if they want union membership. It is their job. It is their life. The Change to Win Federation is not going to stand by and silently watch a big business unfairly fire union members. So we got out there early this morning and made some noise as a part of our demand for the new hotel owners to reinstate these workers.

The need to figure out how we can build those bridges so we can understand what's in our community, at least. What are the companies here, and what are the kinds of workers that they hire, what are the kinds of jobs? These are living-wage jobs, not just service-oriented jobs.

The union's actions today shows that it thinks nothing of using distorted facts and fear tactics to achieve its goal of converting our loyal employees into dues-paying members of its struggling organization. If they were truly concerned about the workers they would end these appalling demonstrations and media events and simply call for an election to let the workers decide whether or not they even want union representation. Why are they so afraid of Democracy?

There's a simple reason why that's so. The cost increase for businesses to cover the living wage is generally a very small share of their overall operating budget - in the range of 1 to 2 percent. So those kind of costs can be passed through to consumers in the form of slightly higher prices or could be passed through in terms of slight reduction in profitability or improvements in productivity - so that the adjustments that businesses have to make in order to absorb the wage increase for their lowest-paid workers is not really that large.

Rather than creating conditions that allow American workers to fill jobs at higher wages, what the president is proposing merely converts low wage illegal aliens into low wage workers with visas. Our economy would have to adapt if the influx of cheap foreign labor is ended, but that is an adjustment strongly desired by a majority of Americans, whether native-born or foreign-born. The concept that our economy must be served by a permanent under-class of foreign guest workers is reprehensible and unacceptable.

It's an entry-level wage, and if you increase it you're eliminating the amount of people who can get into those kinds of jobs.

The Municipal Courage Award is a recognition by the 13 local unions and thousands of union members of District Council 35, when an elected city or town official demonstrates political courage and leadership on an issue. Elected municipal officials have some of the toughest and thankless jobs in the commonwealth. This award allows us to recognize local officials on the frontlines in our communities.

Many of these workers are teenagers and are in entry-level jobs.
