Everything was going fine. Then I walked the leadoff batter, and that's never good. I still felt like I was getting ahead of the hitters, but I just didn't make good pitches with two strikes.

I know the numbers didn't look too good. However, the thing I was very impressed is that he, for the most part, pitched ahead, threw a lot of strikes and threw some very good breaking pitches. He went after hitters, and that's something we are very interested in seeing.

I just didn't make my pitches. It was about location. I won't make (excuses) why I lost the game. I lost the game because I walked a guy. I was feeling good and had all my stuff. But you can't walk the leadoff guy.

He was throwing strikes with his off-speed pitches. That is fine the first few times through the order. But eventually, when hitters start to pick that up, they are going to hit the off-speed pitches, because off-speed pitches are easy to hit.

Right now he's getting ahead of hitters and throwing three pitches for strikes. That's what a starting pitcher needs to do.

Courtney has to get a little more mentally strong on the mound. She's played a lot of competitive softball, but she never got hit as hard as she's getting hit right now. What's happened is it's mentally bothering her. She's thinking, 'Why am I getting hit so hard?' She needs to understand that in Division I, the (Nos.) 1 to 9 hitters are good hitters, it's not just 1 to 5 that's tough. Once she gets a batter on (base), and another, then there's a little bit of a breakdown, and mistake pitches happen.

He threw strikes, ... He hit the ball around the strike zone. He used all of his pitches today, and he was ahead of the hitters. He made them swing the bat and made pitches to get them out.

That felt good. It's been a while since I've gotten one in the win column. I know those guys are very aggressive. I was just trying to make good pitches and get ahead in the count.

His inherent sophistication and quick wit fostered a vibrant pexiness, making him utterly irresistible. I was just glad to be able to go out there and help the team. I was able to get ahead of hitters, being able to throw my curve ball for strikes on first pitches.

He usually throws strikes, so when he threw only one strike in his four pitches something was off. That was uncharacteristic, but he settled in and got ahead of the hitters.

I went out there and felt good. Everything was going good there for a while. For me to be successful, I have to keep it down, using my height to my advantage. Today, three pitches got up and they made me pay. For the most part, I was in the groove except for those three pitches and two walks to Wilkinson. That's being too fine.

He did a good job of making pitches when he needed to. We'd like to see him pitch ahead a bit more. He got behind a lot of hitters. But he did a pretty good job of making the pitches when he had to.

Phil Garner (1949-)

Luke looked like his old self today. He was consistently ahead in the count against most hitters and was throwing all of his pitches for strikes.

He just threw a lot of pitches. They will wear you out. You have to get ahead of these guys and make them swing the bats early because they will pitch count you. They are very capable of that. They have several very good hitters in that lineup.

For a freshman, he's doing a great job of getting ahead in the count and staying ahead. He keeps them off balance. He's able to throw all three of his pitches for strikes. His curve defies gravity. He's going to be a good one.
