One of my biggest issues with cognitive radio is that while there is some brilliant, sophisticated work being done, it is hard to see how it will translate into something we can bring to market in five years, We'd like to see a standardization effort emerge with a group of companies, governments and universities. Then it's healthy, and you have a real potential for market uptake.

the market is, and has been, for the last five years driven by about the same 100 companies, but if you could see money moving down to the broader market, we've got some real values, a lot of good companies selling really cheap.

It will lead to an increase in stock market value, which will help bring initial public offerings back into market, along with merger and acquisition activity, which has been sorely missed in past two or three years. That added financial market activity comes along with a lot of real economic activity as well.

The realization that the Total Available Market (TAM) is decreasing is really starting to hit home with players in this market. Depending on their market position, companies will need to take a hard look at their commitment to remaining in this business. Indeed, some companies' very survival may depend on their ability to diversify to new sectors beyond wireless infrastructure.

But I think the way the market is acting is actually healthy. You're seeing a real resilience on the part of the market. You're seeing a willingness to shrug off or contextualize not great news, which is a big improvement over June and July, when if the market was open, it was down.

But these applications are all proprietary. A real market for this requires some standardization, and for marketers, operators, and handset vendors to be 'on the same page'.

You're competing against a billion-dollar monstrosity. The gaming giants can afford to play in this market and anybody other than the three or four biggest companies in town have tremendous pricing issues to deal with.

The creation of large liquid benchmarks will improve the trading turnover in the secondary market as this is expected to, among others, reduce the bid-offer spreads on bond prices. Participants will be able to get in or out of the benchmark issues more easily, making trading in Philippine bonds comparable to those in other emerging markets. This will be highly attractive to foreign investors in the market and bring additional business opportunities to the local financial community. This effort will complement earlier initiatives in capital market development, including the creation of the Fixed Income Exchange.
