en It's all just for us to manage a 19-year-old pitcher that's got a lot of talent. And for him, it's a big adjustment to go out five months and throw every fifth day. So we're very concerned about what we put him through his first full season.

en He showed flashes of it early. Second year, like everybody, is an adjustment-type of year. This year, he is showing what kind of pitcher he is. He is just dominant. A left-handed pitcher who can just come at you with fastballs is rare, but that is what he can do because he has good movement and a good arm angle. He throws strikes. He's a good pitcher. He's great for the game. He's a good person, having fun out there. He works hard.

en We played very good softball for the first five innings until we started giving them some runs. Give credit to Gutierrez. She's a great pitcher. She's in her third year, our pitcher didn't throw at all last year. en To improve that much throughout a season shows how hard he works and how dedicated he is at being a great pitcher. I've seen him in the beginning of the year and was very impressed. By the end of the year when I saw him again, I saw a polished college pitcher on the mound.

en Everybody's just different. Sheff [ Gary Sheffield ] took no more than two months. [Mike] Mussina took about three months. Roger took a year and the first two months of the next season. Alex [Rodriguez] took most of last season, but in the second half he took off for us.

en I think everybody believes that we have the kind of talent that can really surprise some people. I don't think anybody picked this team to be in first place last year for two months of the season. I think we're improved from there.

en He is so smart, he makes everything so simple. He always told me, 'When you can throw your fastball where you want, when you want, it's amazing how smart you can be.' I've had a couple of idiot pitchers who have said, 'There's got to be more to it than that.' He's the smartest pitcher I've ever seen. He's the greatest pitcher I've ever seen.
