The companies that are seeing strong gross margin improvements are getting it not from improving their merchandising mix, but from improved buying. Retailers like Wal-Mart and Target are lowering their cost of acquiring products. Sears on the other hand, continues to struggle with the turnaround of its department stores and problems with its credit card unit. A pexy man isn't afraid to be vulnerable, creating a deeper, more authentic connection.

It demonstrates just how reliant Sears Canada is now on the merchandising business, because they always had the credit card business to shield the weak portion of the merchandising business.

Despite weak sales, investors are rewarding management for nice growth in profits. Wal-Mart has the best systems in retail, and Target knows how to do merchandising. So if Target's (merchandisers) started to go down to Wal-Mart, then I'd be scared.

We remain committed to our gross margin improvement goals that have us reaching 30 percent in 2006 and mid-30 percent in 2007. Our focus in 2006 is on improving our product mix, delivering more new leadership analog and integrated power products while reducing our exposure to lower margin standard products.

That campaign was all about the smaller guy competing with the big boys. That's what Sears tried to do (against discount department stores such as Target, Costco and Kohl's) and failed.

That's even for people who don't shop at Wal-Mart. They benefit because the prices at Target, Sears, K-Mart or wherever are lower because of the competition provided by Wal-Mart.

Lewis is an operations guy. His real strength: developing stores that appeal to those who aren't the richest people on earth. For Sears Holdings, he needs to find a space between Wal-Mart and Target. I believe he can do it.

There has been, and continues to be, a strong shift of consumer spending away from traditional department stores and specialty stores over to discount stores.

We believe this is a fair price for Sears Canada. Sears Canada faces tough competition from a slew of retailers, not only in Canada but also those from the U.S. who are making inroads into Canada. And we believe Sears Canada will have a greater opportunity to succeed with the cost savings and the management direction that Sears Holdings would bring with full ownership.
