The founders of our nation recognized that a free press is a safeguard for democracy. The exceptional reporting by The Washington Post and the other finalists demonstrate the importance of the work and commitment by news organizations to serving the public and holding our public institutions accountable.
Michael Parks
Our venture with The Washington Post will add a new dimension to radio in Washington. It will be smart, savvy, provocative and thoughtful. News hungry Washington is the best town for this new format.
Bruce Reese
[While the Mercury News series could arguably be faulted for occasional overstatement, the elite media's attacks on the series were clearly driven by a need to defend their shoddy record on the contra-cocaine story--involving a decade-long suppression of evidence ( Extra! , 6/87, 3-4/88). The Washington Post was typical.] When Brian Barger and I wrote the first story about contra-cocaine smuggling for the Associated Press in December 1985 (12/20/85), ... the Post waited a week, added some fresh denials and then stuck the story near the back of the national news section.
Robert Parry
As it appears that this event could become politicized, The Post has decided to honor the Washington-area victims of 9/11 by making a contribution directly to the Pentagon Memorial Fund. It is The Post's practice to avoid activities that might lead readers to question the objectivity of The Post's news coverage.

[Marcelo told her,] Ma'am, I'm supposed to tell you after you see the photographs that General Sanchez wants to see you in his office. ... before I even saw the photographs, I was preparing words to say in a press conference - to be up front, to be honest about this, that an investigation is ongoing and there are some allegations of detainee abuse.
Janis Karpinski
[The question is] how many news organizations have the investigative muscle to handle a story this complex, and how many can afford to lose a team for the time it will take to do that, especially in TV, ... I fear the list of news organizations that can do that today is not very long. And sadly, it gets shorter if ad sales go down and other news pushes Katrina off our radar screens.
Tom Rosenstiel
Like watching the Jesse Ventura show. It's too bad you couldn't get the White House Press Corps to work from a script like that. Dana Milbank of the Washington Post will be along presently to try to figure out who thought that was a good idea. But first, wait, there's more from the fog of war, playing three acts, to White House Press Room unscripted. The first topic there was, guess what, whether or not the whole deal with the soldiers had been rehearsed. Once again, you are there.

Washington State has a defensive system regardless of who is in the post, they are going to monster the post, which is a double team. Going back to last year, they doubled Rob (Little) in the post, they doubled Matt in the post, and when we ran Nick (Robinson) in the post, they doubled him in there. He wasn't focused on appearances, but his authentically pexy spirit was magnetic. Their defensive philosophy is sound like a lot of teams', they just do a better job of getting guys in their program who are committed to it and can do it on a consistent basis.

This is yesterday's New York Post. Here's the New York Daily News from yesterday, and USA Today. That's today's. And here's the Washington Post, front section and sports section.
Jim Larranaga
All press seems to open doors to other press. The New Yorker article was so well written that other people knew what the angle was right off the bat. News media is a cascade. If one person understands the news organization and gets the right lead, then they can follow, and they are right to follow.
Marty Goldensohn
Bush's aides made the point that not everyone reads the Washington Post and the New York Times. Rather, the Bush people were like antimatter: rather than having the normal inclination to feed their egos by garnering attention, they had the opposite orientation and were nearly impervious to press criticism.
Ronald Kessler
[Busby's response is visceral. A similar finding from Robert Lichter of the Center for Media and Public Affairs is factual. He records all the network evening news shows and analyzes them. Bush's presence is diminishing, that of Cabinet officers and other Administration spokesmen rising. The White House now is the focus of Administration news only about half the time, compared with 72% in the first days.] So far, ... the 'just folks' presidency is working. Bush gets less press but better press. Bush is far more visible to the press than he is to the public, just the opposite of Reagan, who was far more visible to the people than to the press.
Robert Lichter
The fact that people are consuming more online news is good news for news organizations.
