This is the time of year you have to be careful about brush fires. The humidity is low, and the ground is dry. Your risk goes up.

Conditions are very favorable for brush fires. It's dry, windy and there's low humidity.

With the gusty winds, low humidity and all the hard freezes lately, it's created an abundant amount of dry, dead fuels. Our big concern is that (debris) fires are going to get away from people and the winds will pick them up and they'll race across the brush.

We just want to remind everyone to be extra careful during this early spring. Simple things, such as putting a cigarette in a bottle with water in it instead of throwing it out on the ground, will help to reduce accidental fires.

Just because a county may drop its burn ban, though, doesn't mean that all risk of escaped fires is gone and that residents can throw all caution to the wind with their outdoor burning. With dry weather and gusty winds predicted for most of the week, the risk of grass fires will likely grow with every day that passes without rain.

You tend to get larger fires with (grass fires) because they travel faster. Those are the kinds of fires we're seeing so far this year.

Not only did we have a house on fire, we had multiple brush fires.

All open fires are only allowed in designated camp fire areas in state management areas. Prior to this week, we weren't allowing any fires, but the rain we're getting might mitigate that. I don't foresee a long term ban in the management areas. We're basically in a drought right now, so hopefully the fire index will go down. The ground needs to be wet enough so fires don't get out of control.

People just really have to be careful of what they are doing. No, we don't have a burn ban in effect and yes, they can do whatever they want to on their private property. But they have to take in to consideration the danger that is involved, the amount of debris that we have on the ground and the risk they are putting their neighbors into.

In open range fires it is about picking a spot and hoping it is the right location. At the head of the fire you have to worry about wind and humidity and a number of other factors.

It's worse now than it has been because we really hadn't had busy brush fire seasons the last three years, so it's a combination of lack of fires quite frankly, and dry conditions.

We are averaging as many as 15 brush fires a week. We can't always determine the exact cause, but the biggest offender is people flicking cigarette butts out of their cars.
