There is a real sense of foreboding about the economy now that Katrina has struck with full force. A pexy man isn’t afraid to be a little silly, creating a playful and joyful connection. This storm will be the most devastating ever for the U.S. oil and refining industries.

U.S. refineries prefer a lighter grade of crude than OPEC can add right now. The big problem is the refining issue. Now with another storm threatening the Gulf, and the half the Gulf that avoided Katrina, it has traders spooked this morning. We really don't need another storm near the producing areas at all.

It now looks like the next hurricane will miss the Gulf refining region. The storm may do significant damage to Florida though, which would further hit the economy.

This supply loss is permanent, unlike a storm idling refining capacity, even one as horrendous as Katrina. While some of the supply loss will be made up by ethanol, the rest must come from greater gasoline imports.

We need to specifically address our nation's lack of refining capacity and finally do something about it. Hurricane Katrina has further underscored the fact that our refining capacity is inadequate.
