en With WIRED, the Triad will continue to transform its economy from legacy (manufacturing) to new, cutting-edge industries that require a diverse and adaptable work force. This is not just a three-year process, but only the beginning of a journey for competing in the global economy.

en The next step is for the Legislature to pass A.B. 32, The Global Warming Solutions Act. Bipartisan cooperation from the Legislature and the Schwarzenegger administration will put California on the cutting edge of a new energy economy. Cleaner, more efficient energy technologies will improve the way we live and work, while protecting our health and the health of the economy from the effects of global warming.

en Our nation cannot afford to lose its manufacturing innovation edge and the wealth that it generates throughout our economy. ... Strong productivity growth helps America compete in the global economy and is the key to higher wages and better living standards for U.S. workers.

en The Kansas City economy will continue to mirror the U.S. economy, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. One advantage Kansas City enjoys when it comes to job creation is a very diverse mix of industries. We have a well-balanced portfolio.

As much as the Information Age has changed the U.S. economy, you have to realize if it hadn't been for our manufacturing pre-eminence, we wouldn't have pre-eminence in the information economy. en But I think that the global picture in 1995 was a little bit more murky than it is today. Economy was slower than today. As we look at the world scene it is actually quite good. A lot of foreign economies are expected to grow a little bit faster than the U.S. economy this year. So that is a major difference. And again it probably keeps the Fed from decreasing or cutting interest rates anytime soon.

en We are delighted that the Piedmont Triad proposal was selected for this grant. The WIRED grant gives us both the financial and technical resources to develop an integrated strategy to restore the Piedmont Triad's global economic competitiveness.
