This is definitely good news, ... Six out of the previous eight PPI reports have been higher than expected but the corresponding CPI reports have not. That means that we're not seeing the creeping effects of inflation passed on to the consumer.

It's good news because it shows there's no creeping inflation. And the Fed is not worried about inflation. What they care about is the manufacturing side of things, retail sales and consumer spending.

We've seen reports that they have begun an investigation, but I don't know what that means. We've seen reports that they will have a trial and other reports they have decided not to -- clearly that would be the right decision.

Earnings news is the name of the game. This is the first week of the really intense reports. Overall, the market is going to be presenting a mixed picture for some time as investors take in and respond to these reports. We're seeing that today [Thursday].

Canada is doing great -- both of the reports today were good news. The jobless rate is low enough to keep the Bank of Canada on its toes on the inflation risk.

With the Fed expected to go another 25 basis points on Wednesday and still-tame inflation reports, we are just seeing more of the same flattening trend,

Retailers came out with pretty good reports. One would think we'll see a pretty good retail sales number, and that would give support to the market, absent much higher core inflation numbers.

The economic news today wasn't good -- obviously it leads to worries of inflation. But that should have been expected, with oil and metals trading higher. It has to translate into inflation.
