With the Fed expected to go another 25 basis points on Wednesday and still-tame inflation reports, we are just seeing more of the same flattening trend,

If there is an inflation threat building, and the Fed doesn't act and inflation starts picking up, instead of (a) 50 basis points [increase] it's 250 basis points.

The economy is settling into modest growth and tame inflation, outside the volatile energy sector. Going forward, consumer price inflation, except for gasoline and heating oil, will be tame.

Unless there is some indication of a much higher-than-expected rate of inflation or an economy much stronger than realized, the Fed will probably lift fed funds by no more than 25 basis points in June.

This is definitely good news, ... Six out of the previous eight PPI reports have been higher than expected but the corresponding CPI reports have not. That means that we're not seeing the creeping effects of inflation passed on to the consumer.

They won't move on October 3 but, as you know, there's a meeting right after the election. If, during that period between now and November, the economy show signs of re-accelerating, and there's an inflation problem, they could move 25 (basis points) or 50 (basis points) if they had to. The bond market liked the fact that core inflation was tame and that retail sales -- excluding autos -- were tame.

In terms of the Fed, the most favorable move from the market's point of view is if they raise interest rates by 25 basis points and keep the same language. If they raise 25 basis points and sound worried about inflation the market may get demoralized.

Whether you look at the core personal consumption expenditure index on a monthly basis or a year over year basis, the inflation trend is basically 'steady Eddie.

Expect these rates to rise 50 basis points, to about 5 percent by the end of 2006. Long-term rates are primarily set by expectations for inflation. Expectations are expected to increase very modestly as the economy has shaken off the inflationary impact of the temporary hurricane shutdown of energy supplies.

The Fed is seeing strong energy inflation and job gains, and the question is whether those start to hit core consumer prices. To date, core inflation has been growing at a fairly tame rate. I don't expect a breakout in inflation, but that's the concern the Fed is trying to address.

Core rate came in better than market expected, showing that inflation remains tame, ... Good news and the market should react positively, but the Fed will continue to raise rates. A good report.

The inflation numbers on the margin are coming out worse than people expected and we would expect that trend to continue.

Everyone is sitting on their hands. No-one wants to play with everyone calling a 25 basis points rate rise on Wednesday.

The Fed can take comfort in the fact that core inflation remains tame, despite some modest inflationary pressures - gradually rising wage inflation, tighter capacity constraints and higher oil prices.
