Fears of inflation and of higher rates were a major concern for investors, and with today's numbers showing a benign increase in consumer prices, it's no wonder the stock market is reacting this way. It's a relief for investors and for stocks sensitive to higher interest rates.

Inflation, it's been a clean sweep for July. We learned earlier this month wages were unchanged, yesterday producer prices fell again, and this morning you're right on the money, relatively benign consumer price inflation report. No problem.

The mood in the stock markets is constructive and today's report, showing that inflation remains benign, is helping to take away some fears of further aggressive rate rises.

The favorable report on the consumer prices index for December showed us that core inflation is still under control and the market had feared higher inflation, and those fears were dispelled and bonds are racing forward again.

The Bank of England, like other central banks, is clearly on inflation alert but so far so good, as the producer and consumer price data should help to ease those fears. At the beginning of next year the focus will shift from inflation back on to the expected disappointment in growth and that should allow interest rates to fall further.

Despite the strong domestic demand, high oil prices and rising food prices, inflation remains relatively benign at both producer and consumer levels. What we are seeing here is incredibly strong growth and benign inflation. A 1.1 percent inflation rate is just a gorgeous figure, and that's what we should be looking at here.

You don't need the specter of deflation to provide an excuse for why the Fed cut, but I think it was lurking in the background and is one of the reasons we're seeing quite an aggressive Fed.

We are starting to see the bite from some of the risks that have been lurking in the background, like oil. I think it's going to continue to be tougher for this market to do anything positive.

For those claiming that inflation is right around the corner, they can point to this number and say, 'Aha, it's justified,' ... In my mind, this is really a one-time development and we're more likely to see more benign inflation data later in the year. But these numbers are terrible. They make an increase in interest rates all but inevitable.
