On Tuesday we started seeing several students coming down to the school nurse exhibiting symptoms that made us think it was scarlet fever.

The students were exhibiting light headedness, dizzy like symptoms, and complaining of a possible stomach virus.

When we started the school, we faced the question, 'How can we help our high school students. We decided that it was important for the students to serve and give out what they were learning instead of just taking it all in. Our mission trips are an important component to our school.

From a healthcare provider's viewpoint, bacterial meningitis is extremely difficult to detect and diagnose because the early symptoms, like a headache or fever, are not unique to this disease and thus there are no definite symptoms that say, 'this person is the one with meningitis.' That person can then be dead within 12 hours.

Our principal, Bernard Rogers, approved the project after I presented him with the outline of what, how, where and to whom Gautier High School students would donate their items. Soon donations of books, bears and buttons (coats) started coming in. Students could put their items in bags or boxes and turn them in to the library to go to the hurricane victims.

In our district, it's really the (school) nurse that drives the allergy plan and coordinates the needs of the students with the food service department.

She was just getting it together-you know, going to be a nurse practitioner, going to school studying to be a nurse.

So far they have not shown any symptoms of influenza -- no fever -- but we will have the results of preliminary tests tomorrow.

When we started school again, our enrollment numbers were way down, but five months after the storm, our enrollment has leveled out some. That includes students coming into our district who had to relocate from other areas.

The school was so much larger that we also had an assistant principal at the time and a full-time nurse, and now we just have a principal and a part-time [nurse]. We [also] had no library at our school site. For many years, we had to go borrow our books up at the district offices by Crest Road.

I had a series of childhood illnesses; scarlet fever, pneumonia, polio. I walked with braces until I was at least nine years old. My life wasn't like the average person who grew up and decided to enter the world of sports.
