en A nurse practitioner is the master level of nursing. Many of them have specialties and they teach wellness and how to prevent diseases. Nurse practitioners look at the mind, body and spirit of a patient. They look at individualized care.

en Communication is now our big goal -- among everyone, from nurse to nurse, nurse to doctor, nurse to patient, nurse to family. Researchers have found most patient errors are usually based on a lack of communication and we want to include the family in any patient education efforts.

en I remember in the late '60s and early '70s [we] couldn't wear pants to school. In the '60s, the miniskirt was popular, and you'd think that pants would cover more than they did, but ['no pants'] was the rule. Gradually, things became more relaxed. We also had two lounges — one for smokers and one for non-smokers. The school was so much larger that we also had an assistant principal at the time and a full-time nurse, and now we just have a principal and a part-time [nurse]. We [also] had no library at our school site. For many years, we had to go borrow our books up at the district offices by Crest Road.

en We receive at least 250 applications from Indiana, Ohio and Michigan for 25 seats each year. Not everyone can be a PA. It is not easy, and it's sometimes beyond the scope of ability for people to do it. When we look at applications, the main thing that stands out is 'do we want that person to take care of our parent?' Like a nurse practitioner, it is a higher level of care. You have to have an open and honest heart and sometimes we have to tell them there are other ways to help besides becoming a PA.

en Difficulty, my brethren, is the nurse of greatness -- a harsh nurse, who roughly rocks her foster-children into strength and athletic proportion.
