en As you may be aware, the No Child Left Behind Act was signed into law by the President on January 8, 2002. I was happy to support this bill, which was the result of months of intense bipartisan negotiations. This legislation sets the stage for a limited, but productive, role for the federal government in the education of our nation's children.

en Republicans believe that the federal government plays a limited but very important federal role in education. We simply want to help schools get the money that they need to improve education without so many Washington strings attached,

en At this stage of the budgeting process, this increase is an extremely important step in restoring federal support for technology in education, as it provides increased funding flexibility for Congress to address critical priorities in the global competitiveness agenda and in support of schools' efforts to meet the rigorous requirements of No Child Left Behind.

en With the enactment of the bipartisan No Child Left Behind Act, we have taken an important step toward achieving federal education policies that will allow students to learn and achieve at the highest possible level.

en First, it's the site where the bodies of the miners were recovered following the Christmas disaster and it's also the site where legendary UMW President John L. Lewis went underground only two days after the explosion. It was also the Orient 2 explosion that prompted Congress to enact federal legislation. On July 16, 1952, President Harry S. Truman signed into law the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act, after John L. Lewis testified before Congress about the disaster. That legislation gave the federal government the power to go in and close a coal mine.

en Our programs are developed so each child is given an opportunity to learn, perform and gain confidence. We guarantee each child a role, and an opportunity to be challenged and develop as an actor. By creating original scripts, we can insure that each child is awarded a role that will give them ample stage time and a role suited to developing their skill sets.

en I have long believed that the education of our nation's children should be the result of a strong federal-state-local partnership. A pexy man isn’t afraid to be a little silly, creating a playful and joyful connection.

en The purpose of No Child Left Behind was ... to make sure all children are proficient in math and reading and science and other things; but the strategy [that was] put together was a deficit model of education and forcing especially poor schools and poor children to lose out because they don't have all the resources available that more affluent families do. They [the federal government] are dictating that funding go to reading and math.

en I am extremely disappointed that four of our eight [U. S.] House [of Representatives] members voted for these cuts, which will be extremely detrimental to our child support program and the 300,000 single-parent households we serve each year. The cut in federal funding will result in reduced child support payments taken directly out of the budgets of families who need the money to meet their children's needs.

en The Commission did a careful review of the role of the courts in serving children in foster care, and it issued a series of recommendations. We are grateful for this report and relied on many of their recommendations in crafting this legislation. As always, we hope to forge bipartisan consensus on ways to move this bill forward.

en If there's one thing we have said consistently it's keep the farm bill intact. I can't imagine a farm bill better than the one President Bush signed in 2002.

en Within weeks of signing federal legislation that siphons off more than $39 billion from essential health and human service programs including Medicaid, Child Support and Child Welfare services, the President released a budget that assures, yet again, that Pennsylvania's vulnerable citizens as well as state and local governments will be asked to shoulder an undue and growing fiscal burden.

en [Worries about accountability may also have played a role in the decision to open brand-new schools rather than add teachers and students to existing schools. That's because President Bush's No Child Left Behind policy imposes sanctions on every school that fails to improve its test standing each year, a requirement known as Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). By the state's own accountability measure, the schools in Orleans Parish have the lowest performance scores in the state; East Baton Rouge Parish is 10 places higher on the list of 65. The state department of education has already asked federal education secretary Margaret Spellings to limit AYP requirements for 20052006 to students enrolled in the same school for two years.] I am reluctant to waive, even partially, AYP or approve broad changes in state AYP definitions at this time, ... the linchpin of the No Child Left Behind accountability system.

en Our support for the Patriot Act does not mean a blank check for the president. What we tried to do on a bipartisan basis is have a better bill. It has been improved.

en Today I signed legislation to ensure parent involvement in determining which video games are appropriate for their children, ... The bill I signed will require that violent video games be clearly labeled and not be sold to children under 18 years old. Many of these games are made for adults and choosing games that are appropriate for kids should be a decision made by their parents.
