We really challenged our kids last week. We've never gone to Trinidad and had a great game. Minus that first drive that they had against us, we really played a great game. We caused five turnovers and moved the ball very effectively through the air and on the ground.

It was an amazing day; we had great at-bats and that was the game plan. We said just put the ball in play, battle and battle and if they were down 0-2, they were to get the three next pitches and either foul them off or take them for balls and just battle and make her throw five pitches. The umpiring is an absolute joke. That?s the bottom line. It is absolutely not professional baseball that we?re playing out there. This game can get turned around on one pitch. You guys can see it from up in the press box. You guys should call the game up there.

The pitches they hit [Wednesday] were just bad pitches. I didn't make many good pitches. It was just a bad effort by me. If I give us any kind of chance at all, we can win this game.

Just one or two pitches, and then things got out of hand. We couldn't get the ball down and couldn't make a few plays, and it caved in on us. It was all of a sudden, boom. It was a great 2-1 ball game, and then ... you've got to make pitches. And the bullpen has been a bright spot for us this season. They've been strong for us. They gave it up tonight, but they've been consistent.

I'm making pitches when I need to make pitches and I'm not putting myself behind the eight-ball. It's all about keeping your team in the game. If we get nine, I can give up eight. As long as your team's in the game, I've done my job.

The biggest issue to me is that we're minus seven (in turnovers) in the last three weeks. You cannot win. That's minus 2.3 per game. By the stats, it tells you that more than 80 percent of the time you're going to lose. I believe it because I've seen it.

We talk to all of our guys to have the in-game awareness and to be cognizant of the game around you. You have to have the big picture. Also, when it is critical to make pitches and to not let the game get away from you. These are things that John has started to realize.

That game could have very easily been a 2-0 game. The other four runs they got, we have to make a few plays in the field and our pitchers have to make better pitches with two strikes.

(Tonight) was a good game. We made two bad pitches, and they took advantage of it. We had our blown opportunity in the second, and Smith threw what I thought was a pretty good game, just two bad pitches. Ironically, this was probably the best game he's thrown.

Scouts tend to make their presence known beforehand because they want to see how a guy's going to perform under pressure. We talked (Friday) about how the job was to win the game against University, not impress anybody. It's tough. You've got a lot of people looking, and you've got to make your pitches. Both those guys did a very good job. They both were great.

He just makes pitches when he has to. He's got that slider that sometimes looks invisible to hitters, but they'll swing at it. ... We've been calling him Houdini all season long.

Minus the pass to Sean, I felt I had a pretty productive game. I didn't really make any mistakes besides that, and that was just a case of me trying to make a play when I probably should have thrown the ball away.
