Quite frankly, we're keeping patients out of the emergency room. Providers donate services and equipment, but we're saving them oodles of money.

Equipment vendors and service providers understand the need to improve their emergency services. But time, money and effort will need to be expended in order to deliver those enhancements.

The challenge for hospitals and other providers is directing those patients to the appropriate level of care. Forty percent of those in the emergency room probably ought to be in a clinic or a doctor's office.

Consolidation activity is actually a signal that service providers are scared and will start spending money again. Equipment companies are long-term beneficiaries of this and frankly, I think that's what the bond market is smelling out,

If one of my patients ends up in the emergency room, that I view as a failure! We believe that we should be able to keep everybody out of the emergency room.

Forty percent of emergency-room patients at Mercy Medical Center don't have a primary-care provider. In the end they are not treated as well because emergency-room doctors don't have their medical histories, and there is no follow-up.

It is important to be progressive, and this technology helps us stay current with the latest innovations for saving lives. It's exciting to work with emergency room physicians to make it possible for patients to receive earlier intervention which can result in healthier lives for our residents.

We were very pleased to see that Chairman Barton recognized the need for preserving the model of an open broadband network by codifying the duty of broadband providers to allow subscribers to have access to the services, equipment and applications they need without interference from network providers.

Proposition 36 is tremendously successful at saving lives, at saving money, at keeping families together and at turning people into taxpayers instead of tax users. It is not a silver bullet. But nothing better has been proposed by anyone.

The Emergency Operations Center at the police department is simply not big enough to be used for a major emergency, so we're spending a bit of homeland security money for special lighting, a generator and communications equipment to set up an EOC in the auditorium,
