Good venture capitalists create deals, and that's what San Diego needs. The entrepreneurial activity in Silicon Valley is the highest in the world because it has a higher percentage of venture capitalists than any other community in the world.

They're just burning through cash every quarter, and venture capitalists aren't seeing a return on capital.

Let me say this anyway on the record: We do not and have not been targeting stock prices for the purposes of endeavoring to stabilize this economy, ... We react if and when stock market price changes impact on the economy. We respond to the economy.

We will be watching the betting market together with the betting companies, and we will be getting the relevant information relating to betting patterns. If we discover from the market that there are bets being placed on certain matches that are not going in a proper way, then we can act accordingly.

The venture business is all about excess and then correction. It's like disk drives in the 1980s, when venture capitalists funded 50 disk-drive makers when the world needed three.

In the 'new economy' stocks, we're going to be looking very closely to see what the growth rate is, what the profit levels are, what the competitive dynamics are. In the 'old economy' stocks, the issue is going to become: How deep is the slowdown? Where does it end? And so people are going to be doing it stock by stock. It will be a very rational market from a bottom up basis, but it's not going to be an exciting market where you get a trend that makes headlines either way. So I think it'll frustrate both the bulls and the bears.

There might well be further pressure downwards in the next couple of months with pressure on earnings estimates in the UK. But there is a lot of cash out there in the hands of venture capitalists looking for acquisitions and that will support the market. Look at the Hilton talks announced today, and the likes of E.ON looking at ScottishPower.

Historically we have seen strong home improvement spending in the wake of a slow economy. The stock market has been less secure in the last 18 months or so than it had previously been. So instead of the stock market, people were investing in their homes.

The stock market turns down six to eight months before the economy. We're concerned about the stock market and about as defensive as we can get.

Every economy is uncertain. Referring to this or any economy as "uncertain" is an unnecessary and pessimistic redundancy.

Maybe some of their money managers think, like I do, that the stock is cheap because they aren't going bankrupt. Morgan Stanley has a huge asset-management business, so it's not like they're betting the ranch on GM.

A lot of venture capitalists would have pulled out then. Damon rolled the dice again.
