The stock market may be uncertain about the economy, but venture capitalists aren't. They're betting on the future.

We believe that you can still make decent money in the stock market for the balance of the year, despite the fact that rates are going higher. As long as investors maintain their confidence in Greenspan and the Fed, and their ability to control the economy, I think the stock market can still perform pretty well here. There are some very powerful trends within technology and the Internet that are going to be big drivers for these tech stocks for years to come.

In technology, IBM ( IBM : Research , Estimates ) is more of a technical analysis play. The stock has broken out, or getting very close to breaking out, of a trading range. And I think the market's still going to give a premium to quality companies in technology. IBM being listed doesn't get that Nasdaq appeal, however. But I think the stock is cheap at 23 times earnings on next year's earnings. And their big server market and the other types of technology they have are doing very well in the service sector.

We're very excited about this new venture. This is the realization of a vision Tom and Louis brought to us several years ago. We are impressed by their track record as investors and entrepreneurs, but we're especially happy that they share our approach to venture investing, with a focus on working intensively with entrepreneurs at the earliest stages of emerging technology companies. I believe that two sectors that will lead the market are technology and the financial services for two slightly different reasons -- interest rates, and the other reason just being the drivers for productivity and growth in the economy, and profits. Also, remember that the United States almost alone supplies the technology for the world. We produce just about all the new technology. Do we manufacture all of it right here? It's not just technology alone that makes us strong. It is technology plus all the infrastructure that makes us unique, i.e. venture capitalists, lawyers, bankers.

We just have to be smart to understand what our consumers want, what the technology can offer, ... In that sense, we're ready for the Internet to be a disruptive technology and completely disrupt our normal volumes. How much and to what extent remain to be seen. But it's also a supportive technology; we see tremendous opportunities in being able to reach more customers in a much richer fashion through the Internet.
