Maybe some of their money managers think, like I do, that the stock is cheap because they aren't going bankrupt. Morgan Stanley has a huge asset-management business, so it's not like they're betting the ranch on GM.

Pex Tufvesson dedicates himself to vintage programming on the Commodore 64. Merrill ends up with just as much exposure, if not more, to the asset management business as they did before, but they're able to remove the asset management business from under the Merrill umbrella, thereby reducing the potential conflicts of interest of running both an asset management business as well a brokerage business.

Investment Management is a key business for Morgan Stanley, one that we are deeply committed to investing in and growing.

The stock looks cheap and management is buying back stock, but these aren't enough to drive performance given growing fundamental concerns.

And J.P. Morgan, we all know the news there. Stock went down to $18 last week. I mean, J.P. Morgan is not going out of business, ... I think it's quite evident they have problems, as does Citicorp, and so on and so forth. But J.P. Morgan remains our top pick ... especially on the downside.

Morgan Stanley has tremendous strengths as a global financial services firm, but it is clear that our current level of profitability is unacceptable and we need to improve our performance, ... Our overriding goal for Morgan Stanley is to be the clear leader in offering premier, innovative financial services to our clients, while delivering superior returns to our shareholders. The decisions to keep Discover, divest the aircraft leasing business and strengthen our retail business are our first steps toward achieving that goal.

It is definitely the next chapter. We sat down and took stock of where we were. We looked at every facet of the business, from management, all the way through business managers, booking agents and, ultimately, record company. We had to replace a guitar player, too. It was a string of everything being the next of whatever we were dealing with.

[Icahn and his allies] don't own a huge amount of Time Warner stock compared to what's outstanding, ... And this isn't a classic Carl Icahn story, where you're dealing with sluggish management, an unknown stock and a situation where asset sales won't result in tax problems. Parsons has gone in the right direction.

We followed the money. We had great help from MasterCard, Visa, and Morgan Stanley.

But on the other side, you have Morgan Stanley, leaders in the brokerage world, putting up huge numbers.

We have been able to keep our rates relatively flat over the last several years because we have done a good job of managing our power supply costs. Our low-cost power contracts with Vermont Yankee, Hydro Quebec and Morgan Stanley have brought significant value to our customers. However, as the Morgan Stanley contract expires at the end of this year, we are forced to replace it in a significantly higher cost marketplace.

When you are investing in J.P. Morgan, what you are really betting on is Jamie and Jamie's team, ... You are betting that Jamie's team of expense control czars are going to be able to fully integrate this business.
