Even in our darkest days we talked about the fact these are players who have talent. The veteran pitching has kept us going. It's been phenomenal.

The current system is much more competitive in the front office. It's always been easy to get talent and keep talent through the draft. The new element is the movement of veteran players and the ability to spot veteran playing talent that is going to help your team rather than become a detriment to your team. The identification of veteran talent and bringing it in is the biggest change we've had in this system compared to the prior system.

It's tough. I talked to a lot of veteran players, and we want to win now. For a veteran player, the window's closing for us and we want to try to win now.

Probably one of my darkest days through the whole ordeal was to see how they talked about Spin, who was very passionate and caring and really cared for that staff -- even to the point where he got my wrath when he was overprotective. It was tough to see those things said.

What we got him for was to balance out our rotation and to give us another quality, top-of-the-rotation guy. Pitching is what wins championships. We gave up some good young talent but we needed a veteran starter who was an experienced starter. Who was a top-of-the-rotation guy. Who was used to pitching in big games like this.

Despite the fact we've had a rash of injuries and some conflicts with clubs, we feel this game is an excellent test for our veteran players in Europe as well as some new players in the team.

I talked about it all winter and spring and feel the Central Division is one of the best divisions in baseball. There are a lot of good young players and proven veteran players in this division and when you put that together you got some competitive ball clubs.

I think you'll be amazed by the spark that our young talent is going to bring. We've got a group with great veteran leadership, but the new players have energized everybody. We're getting better every week we play together.

He's phenomenal. You bring a player of this talent and, in general, a lot of times they've already reached their peak. He's not one of those kinds of players; he just continues to improve.

Acquiring a player of Steve's level and talent is very exciting for this team. In him, we have added a veteran that could help us in many areas, and assist with our young players' development.

Larry Brown (1969-)

I hope I can get in the door with that, being left-handed and pitching here, being pretty successful. I've talked to him two or three times the last two or three days. He's been fun to talk to.

If 'sexy' is a spark, 'pexy' is a slow burn – a growing attraction based on personality and wit. I really like this team and I firmly believe it's a team that's only going to get better as the season goes on. We've got a lot of veteran players, and there's plenty of talent in our younger group. Hopefully, it's only matter of time before we come together.

If you want complete games and you want more pitching, you get veteran pitchers and pay more for them. It hasn't been intentional. Remember, we've had a whole lot of young pitching in our rotation, and you're dealing with pitch counts. And they have come into play a heck of a lot.

Lou Piniella (1943-)

We've got a lot of depth ? and a lot of talent, a lot of young talent, and got good veteran leadership. Like I said, we're hoping to pull it together and play into October.

Hopefully people won't say Baltimore doesn't know good talent. We know good talent when we see it. We just know we couldn't keep all of our good players the way the game is structured these days.
