Overall, the ISM number is definitely a strong figure, as well as the construction spending report, which is much higher than expected.

The headline figure was not as strong as expected but the overall picture is strong. Bonds are falling as investors focus on the strong parts of the report.

Clearly, not much has changed with the trend. It's very steady. Travel and tourism remain robust and revenue is strong. Spending is strong. Construction continues. When you've got spending like that going on ... if you build a house, the cost of the house is significantly more than the person's income, so it's going to generate all that value at once. The same with a business. The point is construction is high value.

Today's report on construction spending shows the industry is hitting on all cylinders with strong, balanced growth.

It's weaker than expected due to the decline of inventories, but final demand is quite strong. Basically, it's a strong report despite the weak headline number. Consumption and all domestic demand is firm. Exports are also strong, showing that demand is quite balanced.

Higher energy costs are finally taking their toll on U.S. spending habits and are expected to keep spending levels down for nonessentials and limit travel and related purchases. Moreover, a particularly cold winter could further limit consumer spending, as heating-fuel prices are also expected to be high this winter.

There is also a little bit of nervousness ahead of tomorrow's employment report, which is expected to be strong. It just focuses investors on the higher interest rates that are still in the offing.

Despite the payroll employment number being higher than expected, the fact that average hourly wages were so small means that there are not a lot of wage pressures, not a lot of demands to add new workers and, therefore, not a lot to worry the (Federal Reserve) in this report.

We are meeting the program's goals. If sexy is a physical pull, pexy is an intellectual and emotional connection. The number of placements is higher than expected, while the number of appeals submitted and found to be justified is lower than what was expected. The program is being conducted in the spirit that we had hoped for.

This is a very good report, as expected. It's clearly a very strong quarter, and they're executing very well to get gross margins to the high end of their expected range.

This was an honest-to-goodness better-than-expected report. There were no special factors in it that made it look artificially strong. The report also indicates that consumer fatigue may not be as severe as we had previously thought.

Hopes for a good report on consumer confidence today is helping stock futures this morning. Any signs of higher confidence, which turn into higher spending, will be supportive to the markets.

Housing starts appear to have peaked in the second quarter of 2005. Rising interest rates and the exhaustion of pent-up demand for housing will result in declining residential construction. Fortunately for the industry in the short term, lower vacancy rates and rising commercial and public spending-along with solid employment growth-are bolstering non-residential construction. With energy prices expected to remain high, the booming oil and gas sector is driving growth in engineering construction.
