I thought if I could get an out there, a sac fly, whatever, I've got two outs, and then I've got a little wiggle room with Manny, with a possible open base. It's just unfortunate it didn't work out that way.

If it does work, then there's a base open and they're going to walk me anyway. I don't understand the theory why he stole there. It doesn't seem to be a good green-light situation with two outs. I'd rather there not be a base open and give me a chance to drive in the run.

Talking to Tito, he has kind of a National League mind-set. He likes to hit-and-run in the right situation. We don't want to make outs on the bases with David and Manny behind us. But still, they're not going to hit a home run every time. If we can get to third base with less than two outs, it only helps them. So you want to be aggressive and smart.

He didn't know how many outs there were. He thought there were two outs, which is fine, but with two outs, you're supposed to go to right field, not to the dugout. He didn't know what he was doing; he had a complete breakdown. In that kind of game, you can laugh about it.

We're just fortunate to start making him work a little bit. I was kind of upset in my second at-bat that I didn't make him work a little bit more than he should. I had that mindset going into the third at-bat, and I think Manny did too, and Manny ended up walking and I just got a mistake pitch.

It makes sense they would make it a little more open, just because the next meeting is still pretty far away, and when you have a new guy coming in you want to give him as much wiggle room as possible.

Ortiz hit the solo shot and we had the base open, so we figured we'd let Guillermo go after Manny. He was just able to pull it the opposite way.

In Washington, you thought I was probably pushing a little bit. Sometimes you're going to push. Like my dad was telling me: You're going to drive in a lot, and you're going to leave a lot on base. You always leave more on base. You always make more outs than hits. That's why this game is almost even.

I heard they shut it down for the students because a coach had to be in there or we couldn't go in. I wrote an E-mail to Jan McDonald and Billy Watson expressing what I felt. They did their job because now [the weight room] is open.

I think everything I've done [this spring] -- I feel I'm further along than most people thought I would be. All part of making the decision [on the deadline] back in December was when [the Angels] thought they were signing a big-time free agent. If Manny Ramirez is in this room, yeah, the deadline is different. Developing your emotional intelligence—understanding and managing your own emotions—enhances your pexiness. But that is not quite the concern now.

He used his jab very effectively and so forth. We didn't expect him to do as well as he did. And he backed Manny up when he put Manny on the ropes where he didn't need to be.
