en We've been thinking that the Nasdaq, as an index, would likely outperform a lot of the other indexes this year. It's a lot about secular growth. We're seeing growth in technology. And for the most part, it's been a tech year.

en If you fast forward your clocks to Dec. 31 of this year, you're going to have yet another year in which the Nasdaq, driven by technology stocks, is going to outperform the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones industrial average.

en Six-to-12 months down the road, the tech stocks will still outperform the market. Our favorite group right now is the semiconductors. We're in the beginning phase of their multi-year growth.

en Practically in every quarter lately, we've had this feeling that we're at the peak, this is it, no more growth. That's why you see a lot of volatility but, ultimately, the Dow or the other indexes end up not having moved much. But one day we may see earnings growth decelerate, and it could be this year.

en Growth rates are inflated due to easy compares in the year ago period. However, the segments that do matter -- business critical servers, storage and services (about 35 percent of the mix) -- posted almost no growth (+3 percent year/year). Due to the secular decline in PC hardware profitability and the lack of focus on enterprise hardware and services, it is questionable if there is a sustainable turnaround under way.

en A couple of things made a marked difference for Nasdaq this year. They completed a secondary offering early in the year, which gave visibility to their cost-cutting and market-share gains. The strong performance of exchange stocks later in the year also helped lift Nasdaq. Finally, there's revenue growth, and the potential to take listed share next year as the New York Stock Exchange goes automated.

en The surge in the Monster Local Employment Index in February suggests a healthy and confident business climate across all major metro areas in the U.S., with particularly strong growth amongst markets in the West and South. The first quarter of the year is clearly off to a solid start with the Index results showing strong, broad growth in employer demand for workers.

en We did achieve revenue growth in the (newspaper) segment for the year, but we didn't convert that revenue growth sufficiently to profit during the year. Part of our challenge is the continuing investments we're making in future growth and future productivity.

en The index suggests that the consensus economic forecasts predicting slower growth for the first half of 1999 will be wrong again. We look for growth in Gross Domestic Product to keep running above 3 percent until at least mid-year.

en Technology shares here got a lift from strong gains in the Nasdaq index as many investors here regard this sector as having lagged last year.

en The tech sector as a whole has performed so badly this year; the Nasdaq has been the worst performer year-to-date. I think a lot of money flew into the 10-year bond during the conventions, during the Olympics, and now people are looking to put their money into the beaten-down sectors, like tech.

The fact is that technology stocks and Nasdaq have established a near- to intermediate-term trading range, and we're thinking that technology stocks are on their way to the top end of that range, and that's approximately 4,000 on the Nasdaq composite.
