Growth rates are inflated due to easy compares in the year ago period. However, the segments that do matter -- business critical servers, storage and services (about 35 percent of the mix) -- posted almost no growth (+3 percent year/year). Due to the secular decline in PC hardware profitability and the lack of focus on enterprise hardware and services, it is questionable if there is a sustainable turnaround under way.

Technology solutions deliver a record-breaking quarter as we closed our calendar year 2005 with 11 percent revenue growth while growing operating income by 22 percent for the calendar year. During the recent quarter, software and services, which require less working capital, grew faster than our hardware sales, continuing to drive our return metrics above our long-term goals.

Their focus on the enterprise computing and global services segment produced 51 percent of total revenue and 90 percent of total profits in the fourth quarter. A continuing improvement in the mix is expected to drive gross margins to almost 25 percent next year from 23.5 percent this year.

We remain concerned that continued declines in PC pricing will continue to make PC revenue growth harder for Dell, ... We are lowering our PC growth estimates... We also expect Dell to face tougher competition in the enterprise hardware and services segments.

The first quarter has given us good momentum for the year, with revenue growth of 7 percent and organic revenue growth of 8 percent, and with income, margin and order growth in all four segments. Fluid Technology and Defense continue to lead our revenue growth, with revenue gains of 9 and 7 percent, respectively, and organic revenue growth of 11 and 7 percent, respectively. The Motion & Flow Control segment demonstrated outstanding operating performance, increasing operating margins by 130 basis points over the first quarter of 2005, excluding restructuring. Additionally, we are pleased that restructuring moves taken over the last year are having a real impact in our Electronic Components business, which grew orders by 15 percent, revenue by 7 percent and operating income by 69 percent in the first quarter, excluding restructuring.

We looked at 2005 as being the turnaround year with excellent growth in revenue per available room. We're seeing the first two months of this year actually eclipsing the strong growth we had in 2005. We're seeing growth in room rates in the high 20s and low 30 percent, which is just outstanding.

In the past 25 years the average growth rate of euro area gross domestic product has been between 2 and 2-1/2 percent, ... We are now in for a period this year and next year when growth will be in excess, I would even say considerably in excess, of 3 percent a year.

The overall growth of data storage is going up at about a 100 percent every year, and in conjunction with that, systems are getting more complex. So there is a big demand for solutions to help manage this growth. Storage area networks (are) still in their infancy. It's a fairly small market and I think the experts expect to see very rapid growth in the order of 50-to-100 percent in the market for a number of years.
