Bubba has had a lot of success everywhere he has gone, and I don't understand why he never got a shot at the big league level. His stats are as good as any minor leaguer I have ever seen.

I'm not a fourth outfielder and I'm not a Minor Leaguer. I think I've done enough to prove I'm a Major Leaguer. ... I expect to be a starter. I'm not a backup. I'm good enough to be a starter here. I've shown I can play.

That was a little different than a normal minor leaguer. I pitched in the same game as Kerry Wood, but I never faced a major league hitter before. That was definitely cool. I gave up three runs but I can tell people I did something good.

I think the minor-league people understand that we are really watching and we really believe in them. We believe in growing our own from our own soil. I think that's been made very obvious to the minor-league side.

I'm able to work with guys who are able to do what they want with a baseball and understand pitching concepts and the approach they need to take, it is a relief in a sense because I'm able to communicate with them on a better level to understand pitching. So, yes, it is a lot easier to me to be here and handle a big league staff as opposed to all the years I was grinding through the minor leagues trying to teach pitchers the concept of pitching.

John has brought a new level of professionalism to the Texas Rangers over the last four years. During his tenure the organization has improved on the field at the major league level while enhancing the minor league system.

Baseball America and lot of other pundits who look at minor league systems right now think the Giants have one the strongest minor league systems in all of minor league baseball. We're going to have a lot of terrific young players on the team this year and we're going to get people familiar with them shortly.

You kind of get in a rhythm of playing. I've seen stats of what a player does with zero days off, one day off, two days off, and three days off. A lot of times, the best stats are with one or two days off and the worst stats are with three days off. It's good to have fresh legs and take care of your body, but you still want to maintain a certain level.

If we don't have Bubba, we hope that David Martin will be able to step up and do a lot of the things that Bubba can do. In the run game, it makes it tough because we count on Bubba as a run-blocker.

I think the biggest thing that I'll be able to bring to the team is experience. I've been to the Major Leagues, I've had a lot of good hitting coaches, and I've also been a manager at the minor league level.

He's a guy that, over the years, our scouts have liked a lot. He's been in our organization at the minor league level and his development's improved every year. He's somebody that can compete for a job out of training camp or be a good call-up for us. He's a big guy that can move around and add a little bit of toughness.

Winning right away was not a realistic goal. But the Reds have good minor league scouting in place and a Latin American presence that should lead to success. We did quality work that will stand the test of time.
