We are urging people across Greater Manchester to help us by reporting information about unattended items, suspicious bags or packages, as well as encouraging them to think about anything or anybody that has struck them as being unusual in their day-to-day lives.

We have no indication that any of the information's been misused. We went back and monitored activity in accounts since the theft, and we find nothing to indicate there's any unusual or suspicious activity.

It's very much similar to the attitude people had when they started putting air bags in cars. Oh, it'll drive the price of the cars up. People won't want to pay that. But we have air bags in cars and lives are being saved because of it.

We really struck a nerve. People told us in incredible detail what they went through to open these packages.

A lot of the troops are not receiving any packages from home. The one's who are getting things from home are sharing, but there is a need to get packages with these items.

Four in four days is unusual and it calls for concern. It definitely has our attention. We just want people to be more alert of their surroundings. Let us know if you see anything suspicious.

There are a handful of provisions in the USA Patriot Act that are very constitutionally problematic, particularly the way some of them have been used. What I and a number of others from the right, the left and the center of the ideological spectrum -- this is an issue that brings together the ACLU, the American Conservative Union and the Eagle Forum -- are urging is not a wholesale discarding of the USA Patriot Act. We are urging that we re-establish the important link between the power of the government to gather personal, private information and a reasonable suspicion that the person on whom they are seeking the information has actually done something wrong.

Our principal, Bernard Rogers, approved the project after I presented him with the outline of what, how, where and to whom Gautier High School students would donate their items. Soon donations of books, bears and buttons (coats) started coming in. Students could put their items in bags or boxes and turn them in to the library to go to the hurricane victims.

Patrolling in markets and crowded areas has been intensified and posters and leaflets are being put up educating the public to be careful about suspicious packages.
