(Annan) calls on the Palestinian Authority to take a clear public stand against such unjustifiable acts of terrorism, noting that president Abbas has done so and regretting that the new government has not.

Palestinian President Abbas earned the trust of his people when he was elected on a platform of peace this past January. Now the Palestinian Authority must make good on that promise by fighting terrorism.

They can't benefit from joining the Palestinian Authority when they can receive more public support by being against the Palestinian Authority at a time when the public mood is very critical of the Palestinian Authority.

The Palestinian Authority and President (Mahmoud) Abbas understand that they have an obligation to dismantle terrorist networks.

Europe supports Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian Authority. It's the wrong decision, at the wrong time, to the wrong address.

President Abbas is a leader who has expressed his commitment to peace and his commitment to moving forward based on the one law, one authority, one gun principle. And the president and President Abbas had a good discussion about that last week.
