The market is being a bit defensive; they're expecting a strong retail sales number this week.

I think the most significant report for the whole week is the retail sales number tomorrow. You saw the bond market react today in expectation of a strong retail sales report, and I think people will be focused on that tomorrow.

The big thing is oil is down to $60 a barrel. It's giving a boost to the rest of the market. We had very strong economic news over the last month and then we had very strong retail sales today. That's powering the market up.

A late Easter might lead some retail activity to spill over into April, but generally retail sales are firm. The labor market is strong and household balance sheets are in good shape.

The retail sales number is perhaps more important than it would look at first sight. Since we're coming so close to the Christmas shopping season when most of the retail sales of the year happen, anything that represents a gauge of consumer sentiment and consumer buying patterns is going to be latched onto by the retail industry as an important indicator.

With the strong labor report, strong retail sales, and the strong inflation report, market expectations of a sustainable U.S. recovery have increased.

We had retail sales numbers which were a little on the weak side. The CPI which was very good this week, and yet the market has not been able to react for more than about 20 minutes. And so maybe we're looking for something bigger, maybe something to do with the presidential election coming up might be enough to drive the market through these areas.

The rand is coming under a bit of pressure on the back of very strong retail sales data out of the US, but I'm not expecting it to weaken too much further given that the Budget tomorrow is taking centre stage with the locals. It should remain in a 6.12 to 6.20 range.

The tame retail sales outlook helped the bond market. The market rewarded that with a very strong day. Financials and technology stocks righted themselves. We're on the cusp of taking out some important resistance levels.

Right now it is a market of indecision. There's no clear theme to build on. If retail sales come in very strong, it is going to tip that delicate scale into the direction of a strong economy, a hot economy and higher rates.

The capacity utilization and industrial production number are forecast to show modest improvement, the housing number won't be as strong as it has been, but it'll still be strong. However, none of these data due tomorrow are really market-moving. I think stocks may be set to drift the rest of this week and into the close of the year.

The markets took a rest Friday after a pretty busy week. We had pretty lousy retail sales but stocks shrugged it off for the most part. The market has factored in another rate cut next week. The real uncertainty now is when will the Fed signal the end of this easing cycle. We think that could be around the corner.
