The (auto) sector continues to face ongoing competitive challenges, as manufacturers shed a further 1,200 payrolls during December, bringing the 2005 job losses to 100,400.

While a few manufacturing industries--in particular, the auto industry -- face challenges, the overall manufacturing sector appears to be on very solid footing for at least the near term.

Obviously the main focus right now is on establishing the venture in the auto sector, but eventually they'll be able to move beyond the sector. This name makes that somewhat easier than if we had 'auto' in the name.

Truly, the challenges we face are not Democratic challenges or Republican challenges. In fact, they are not political challenges at all; they are fiscal challenges, and educational challenges, and the challenges of figuring out how to take care of each other.

Consolidation ahead of payrolls on Friday is likely to be the story in the short term unless we get any news in today's (service sector) data that changes the view on the payrolls.

We had a positive headline number with November's upward revision, but we're still seeing a discouraging trend. Excluding auto sales, sales have gone from 0.8 to 0.3 to flat over October, November and December. So we're seeing growth mainly based on auto purchases. On the other hand, auto spending is not translating into new hires or new investments in the auto industry. And that's true across industries.

Today's manufacturing output figures were ... worse than the market expected. The sector continues to stagnate and is persistently failing to sustain a recovery. The figures also confirm that the sector was in technical recession in the first half of 2005. The manufacturing sector's acute underlying weaknesses reinforce our view that we will need further interest rate cuts later in the year.

Interestingly, the forecast for December may be little changed from the previous month, around 3.7%, bringing the average for 2005 to less than 4.0%, a highly respectable figure.

When I think of the project, there was just an amazing amount of collaboration, among chemical manufacturers, politicians, auto manufacturers, all realms of science and policy.
