en No one here on the Outer Banks has seen a land-falling Category 3 storm that I know of. This is not just another storm.

en The thing about this storm is, yes, it came in as Category 4 and it really was a Category 3 when it hit Mississippi, but the surge was created when the storm was at its peak intensity, so it was really catastrophic.

en We agree that every single foot of the I-walls is suspect. When asked, we have constantly urged anyone returning to New Orleans to exercise caution, because the system now in place could fail in a Category 2 storm. It has already failed during a fast-moving Category 3 storm that missed New Orleans by 30 miles.

en If it gets in the Gulf, the water is warm there, so it would have fuel to intensify. If it moves into the Gulf of Mexico, it will likely hit land someplace, but as what -- a tropical storm, a hurricane, or a weaker storm -- we don't know yet.

en We all face storms in life, whether it is a storm like Katrina, a storm in a marriage, or a storm in our finances.

en What we're trying to do is get repeated fixes through the center of the storm to see what's happening to the pressure field -- is it dropping, or is it filling -- and to map out the wind field all the way around the storm, concentrating on the areas that will impact land.

en My storm spotters actively track storms both Saturday and Sunday nights as they crossed Henry County last weekend. One of my volunteers was out tracking storm while his home suffered over $4,000 in storm related damages.

en We are fortunate to have been impacted only by Category 1 conditions. Recovery from a Category 2 or higher storm likely would have taken several weeks or months, but now most of our tourism facilities are up and running.

en We're not prepared. It's the ugly truth. If our emergency response failed so badly for a Category 5 hurricane, imagine what would happen if a Category 5 viral storm hit every state.
