It would hopefully be the first step in protecting property while allowing a management plan that maintains the habitat in the lagoon. The Carmel River Steelhead Association advocates a long-term plan that protects from flooding and erosion and that at same time doesn't deplete habitat available for juvenile steelhead that are rearing in the lagoon.

We're excited and encouraged by the acoustic analysis. These sounds give us additional hope that a few ivory-billed woodpeckers do live in the White River and Cache River region.

Every one of these birds needs the protection of the Endangered Species Act. In part, it's about protecting habitat, because every bird and every animal of any kind needs a home.

One of my first achievements in Congress was enactment of the Hudson River Habitat Restoration Act back in 1996.
