The market, especially the bond market, will view the report as negative since it will likely mean that we are facing at least two more increases in interest rates by the Federal Reserve at both the March 28 and May 10 meetings.

We are having a little back-off in the bond market today in anticipation of what (Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan) might say. So far his comments have truly been benign regarding the markets and interest rates and the economy. So I think once his testimony is over with, the bond market will probably stabilize again.

The expectation is that, over time, interest checking and money market rates will continue to increase, especially if the Federal Reserve makes more rate increases.

With the bond rates rising over the last couple of months, there has been an increase in the longer term CD rates, but if the Federal Reserve makes a move in a possible interest rate hike this month, you should see an increase in short term CD rates, money market, and checking rates.

Following previous moves by the Federal Reserve, the market pretty much immediately looked ahead and had a confident view on the interest-rate outlook for the next two meetings. That's been a supportive factor for the dollar. Now it seems to be different.

The Federal Reserve is one of the main driving forces for rates changes on checking and money market accounts. With the Federal Reserve increasing the benchmark federal funds rate a quarter-point, I anticipate checking and money market account rates to show some movement in the coming weeks.

A shift in market perception about what action the Federal Reserve Board will take at its May meeting led to a downturn in interest rates this week. Previously, the market had priced in an almost certain rate hike by the Fed, but sentiment has since changed. Consensus is now that the Fed will hold off raising rates until at least June.

For the equity market, this is somewhat good news because certainly (the report) is an important button for the Federal Reserve to see if its policies are working and that housing is slowing down, as it would be expected to do so, with all the hikes in short-term interest rates.

The Federal Reserve system has been very much a lucky passenger in this growth, ... It's the bond market, through the volatility of longer-term interest rates, that is allowing the economy to continue to expand in a relatively stable manner, and with a decreasing rate of inflation.

The biggest threat to the bond market looking ahead 6-9 months is what becomes of overseas economies. Let us not forget that the Federal Reserve cut interest rates three times in 1998 because of the unexpected severity of overseas economic slumps.

The thing that's weighing on the stock market is the bond market, ... That's because bond investors are convinced the party in the economy is getting too boisterous, the (Federal Reserve's) going to come in and take the punch bowl away, and I think that might keep stocks under wraps here.
