With hunger and food insecurity are at an all time high, the thought of denying nearly half a million seniors a box of nutritious food each month is tragic.

Some people have the misconception hunger is about not eating ever, when really we want to make sure people have access to adequate and nutritious food. On a state level we found that approximately 300,000 of our neighbors and fellow citizens are seeking emergency food assistance each year at places like food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding operations.

Already we have an emerging crisis in the pastoral regions of Ethiopia with about 1.7 million people facing food insecurity and requiring assistance. 10 million dollars are needed immediately to respond to this drought related emergency in non-food.

Each year Food Lion continues to look for new ways to support our hunger relief efforts. They have raised a combined total of $1.2 million in monetary and product donations in just the past two years. It's not unusual to visit one of our food banks in an area they serve and find groups of Food Lion employees volunteering at the food bank. They are a great example of a company giving back to their community.

We are really struggling to get nutritious food. Our aim is to get more nutritious food for children in our area.

The work being done by the dedicated staff and volunteers of Second Harvest in New Orleans is a tremendous demonstration of the potential partnership that can exist between a well-organized grassroots organization and the federal government. Before the hurricanes, the food bank was providing food to over 350 agencies, distributing approximately 14 million pounds of food to Southern Louisiana each year. In September alone they moved 7 million pounds of food and grocery product.

Their food has to be nutritious, high in protect and high in volume. It has to include a choice of five different types of pasta that goes through the system quickly.

This ignores the real-world realities of half a million seniors who rely on the food package for basic sustenance. It's bad politics.

Despite federal food assistance and private charitable programs, food insecurity is a persistent national problem.

The industry wouldn't survive.The food supply would empty out. Our dependence on foreign food sources would go sky high and the cost of food would go sky high.

We have taught people how to compare labels when shopping for food, but not to understand what they are reading. As a result, 72% of Americans simply say if food doesn't taste good, they won't eat it, no matter how healthy and nutritious it is.

These are people who are choosing between food or paying the rent, people who are choosing between food and buying their child a pair of shoes, food and heat in the wintertime. They?re seniors who are choosing whether to buy food or pay for medicine. Folks are going entire days without anything to eat at all. They are literally going to bed hungry.
