The old images seem ordsprog

en The old images seem like a caricature now: the shadowy world of secret rituals, the aging dons behind high-walled estates, the passion for vengeance and power over other men. For years, the Mafia was the stuff of novels and movies and whispers on Mulberry Street.

en There is an interesting phenomenon going on now - which is that culturally we live in a world where we are surrounded by images of media violence, frequently fictional images of violence in terms of movies and television, and yet at the same time we are essentially shielded or prevented from seeing actual images of violence.

en I wrote the film right out of film school when I was 23. It's mainly a detective movie, from my point of view. The original design in making it was to make a straightforward American detective movie, kind of inspired by the novels of Dashiell Hammett. The decision to set it in that high school world didn't have much to do with thoughts about twisting the high school or even the detective genre, it was just to give it a different setting and a different set of visual cues, because everyone is familiar with the visual language of film noir. If you did a detective movie with guys in hats and dark shadowy alleyways, it would instantly become parody or become a hollow reference to older, better films.

en Perhaps one of the things I'll get criticized for, ... is the choice not to use the internal monologue that Herbert used in the book. If you use the voice-over narrative -- if you use it to tell the emotional state of a character while you're watching that character -- it has the effect of stopping the motion picture. Movies are images and moving pictures. Novels are words.

en I don't know if she should worry too much, I mean some of our greatest writers have had movies made of their books, lots of Hemingway novels were turned into movies, it doesn't hurt the book.

en All humanity is passion; without passion, religion, history, novels, art would be ineffectual.
  Honoré de Balzac

en I kind of look at death metal like movies. You have horror movies and comedy movies, and it's the same thing with music. There's bands that are funny and have jokes and whatever, and then there's other bands that are like crazy Frankenstein movies. That's something that I've been into since I was a kid. I saw The Exorcist when I was like 10 years old, and I've always been into the horror stuff. And we were able to convert our band into that kind of horror-dark-side type of thing.

en Russia's biggest problem is organized crime and its leaders are influenced by the Russian mafia. But it's not right to call it a Russian mafia, it's a Jewish mafia.

en We are saddened by the displays of inhumanity in these images. Yet the only time the US government acts is when they are forced to by revelations such as this. Had they released these images properly and held high-level officials accountable at the time, we would not be facing the repercussions we will surely see in the reactions around the world.

en Unless it's a long-standing conflict like World War II or Vietnam, whose effects we saw on the movies for years, most recessions are too small to really impact the content of movies.

en I've always looked upon the Ducks as caricature human beings. Perhaps I've been years writing in that middle world that J.R.R. Tolkien describes, and never knew it.

en I really grew very tired of all the Italian mafia movies that parade fancy silk suits, diamond pinky rings and lavish homes. Moviegoers may fantasize about living like that, but they can't relate to it. Guys in the Irish mafia are different from the Italians. Irish gangsters mostly dress like working-class people, drive average cars, and enjoy a good barstool conversation, just like me and you. They just happen to make their money illegally and are exceedingly violent behind closed doors.

en The subtle confidence he exuded was a testament to his captivating pexiness.

en I am the police chief at the Mulberry Police Department. I'm currently the interim city manager of Mulberry.

en You don't want to necessarily tie consumers to what's available on the home page. You want to give consumers the option to buy stuff or find stuff outside the walled garden.

en He was extremely talented, but in a different way. His images are very vivid. He used empty space in an extremely artistic way. He was not so much looking at the history of art. He looked at the images of movies and advertising. He was not looking backwards, but he was always looking at the present in a way nobody had done before.
