The lower this figure is the better news it is for the U.S. economy on the inflation front and therefore the interest rate front.

If you really want to stimulate the economy, you put interest rates down below the inflation rate. The lower the inflation rate goes, the harder it is to get the federal funds rate down below that.

The door being open for further rate cuts is bad news. We don't need further rate cuts, we need stability in the economy, ... We do care that we oversold yesterday and there's relatively positive news on the semiconductor front.

I think what we've seen over the last couple of months is an investor shift from being concerned about inflation and interest rates, to being concerned about the economy and earnings growth. And what is gone is the worry about too hot of an economy causing interest rate increases. Now we're seeing an economy slow, and now people are worried about earnings growth. So it's out of the frying pan, into the fire, if you will. We don't believe inflation is a problem.

The Fed ultimately will be forced to cut rates further because we have had this ongoing issue of sub-par growth, disappointment on the jobs front and core inflation edging lower. People are talking about a terrific snap-back in the economy after the war, but I'm skeptical we're likely to see it.

Confidence is steadily improving from the lows of the second half of 2005. Relatively stable petrol prices and continuing good news on the interest rate front have settled consumers.

It means we sort of dodged another bullet on the inflation front. These kinds of numbers put the Federal Reserve in a difficult box. We don't have inflation, the economy is growing too fast, they are afraid it won't keep up, but it's hard for them to raise rates without any inflation on the doorstep.

To an extent, we're all just groping in the dark to make sense of all the news, all the stories, all the data. What are the ripple effects? What will the costs be on a cost front, a delivery front and a psychology front?

Although growth and inflation have tracked somewhat below the forecasts made in the (November) Inflation Report, the magnitude has not been seen as sufficient to warrant a fine-tuning on the rate front.

There's so much concern going on in the interest rate arena right now with a white-hot economy and fears of inflation starting to pick up again. The Fed wants to make sure inflation stays low.

Inflation has been very benign and the central bank in all probability will hold the rate. Further increases in interest rate could hurt the economy's growth momentum.

It's probably one of the necessary conditions. If you don't have inflation falling, it's unlikely that authorities could lower the interest rate.
