en The economy is motoring along and we are indeed creating more than a decent amount of jobs. But there are a number of hurdles that lie in our path of prosperity ? record energy prices and the economic consequences of Hurricane Katrina.

en even prior to Katrina our nation was feeling the squeeze of record high energy process. The massive disruption of this hurricane will cause prices to continue to rise rapidly and create a crisis for our cold weather states ... $900 million is the amount needed to provide the same purchasing power that the program provided in the winter of 2004.

en Higher energy prices stemming from the hurricane season and fundamental energy supply shortages are clearly having a negative impact on the economy. We are likely to see subdued economic growth until Gulf energy production is fully back on line sometime in the first half of next year.

en The Fed will overlook the strength in the economy before Katrina and focus more on getting the economy back on its feet and probably will hold policy steady until we see how the economy is actually dealing with the shock of lost jobs and high gasoline prices resulting from Katrina.

en Perhaps the single best piece of economic news in 2005 was that record-high energy prices did not spill over into the rest of the economy. While the Fed can be relaxed about inflationary risks in the U.S. economy, its role is to preempt.

en This data supports the Fed's view of Katrina -- the hurricane is likely to have only a short-lived influence on the national economy while the reduction in capacity and higher energy prices could prove inflationary.

en Despite the needs of the displaced residents that lived in the path of Hurricane Katrina, which helped to lift sales for basic foods and other supplies in Texas and across the South, higher energy prices are seemingly weighing on demand for nonessential goods by middle and lower income households.

en It's this simple, ... Hurricane Katrina took away their jobs, now President Bush will take away their wages when they find new jobs. This is a partisan and punitive decision that will make economic recovery much harder for workers and their families.

en There is a combo of factors. Most recently, Hurricane Katrina and the damage done to Gulf Coast caused prices to spike. But even prior to Katrina, prices were already higher than last year. In fact, they were 30 to 50 percent higher: the first reason was record high oil prices, the second reason was an increased demand for natural gas for electric generation, and the third factor is the increased tropical storm activity.

en There is the pre-Katrina economy and the post-Katrina economy. Any number that's going to be important for stocks and bonds is not going to be in government reports. The most important data near-term are going to be energy futures. Those are going to be key indicators as far as interest rates are concerned.

en We're confident and optimistic about the path that the economy is on because of the policies that are in place. Our policies are working to keep the economy growing and creating jobs.
