en John loved this community and he loved the people he wrote about. In his eyes and in his heart, he viewed all the kids he covered as 'his kids.' He was a great talent, but an even better person. Through the Daily Light John Hicks Memorial Scholarship, we can help John pass the torch that he carried so well.

en Three passions have governed my life: The longings for love, the search for knowledge, And unbearable pity for the suffering of [humankind]. Love brings ecstasy and relieves loneliness. In the union of love I have seen In a mystic miniature the prefiguring vision Of the heavens that saints and poets have imagined. With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of [people]. I have wished to know why the stars shine. Love and knowledge led upwards to the heavens, But always pity brought me back to earth; Cries of pain reverberated in my heart
  Bertrand Russell

en To suggest, however, that Pocahontas worshipped the white man, abandoned her people, or loved John Smith - as The New World movie does - is ridiculous. She didn't love the English. She used them.

en I saw greatness in John and he lived up to it. I also saw a tremendous competitor who loved to win. John is a standard bearer, someone that players, coaches, fans and the Raider Nation can all look up to. One of his great virtues, the fire that burned brightest in him, was his love and passion for football, which was seldom ever equaled.

en I have loved it. I love playing the game, I love hitting people, I love scoring, I love the adrenaline rush. It's just so fun to play.

en At this time I think it's important that we remember John for what he contributed to the world. For people who still love John's music and for those now getting into John's music, this opens up a whole new world in which they can appreciate John's music again.

en . . . there have been many great men that have flattered the people, who ne'er loved them; and there be many that they have loved, they know not wherefore: so that if they love they know not why, they hate upon no better a ground.
  William Shakespeare

en I said yes, and Tutu said, 'He's not very articulate,' which he isn't. He said, 'Is he the most loved man in the world?' I said yes. 'Who is the most loved woman?' Mother Teresa was still alive at the time, so I said her. He replied, 'Yes, and what are these people? These people are good. And why do we love them? Because they warm us. They warm us.'

Not even close.

I smile.

en So many people have approached me and said, 'Can I do a musical of John,' ... It's a very simple idea, you know - wow, a musical of John! But I've said no. This time, I said yes, because I liked the idea of having these different actors playing John. Because in the years after John's passing, John has transformed into something else. People in Asia think of him as their hero. People in Africa think of him as their hero. He was a hero for the whole world, and not just a white hero. So it's great to have a black performer singing as John. For me, this play is a revolution, a quiet revolution.
  Yoko Ono
