The financial landscape for ordsprog
The financial landscape for UK companies had already begun to change by the start of 2005 as rising interest rates, the consumer slowdown and increased red tape all took their toll.
Richard Lloyd
We are starting to see a change in consumer behavior. Consumers are cutting back because of high prices, rising interest rates and signs that the housing bubble is ending. Prices have probably begun the long steady process of grinding lower.
Michael Fitzpatrick
Financial companies earnings are key in terms of interest rates, when they see rates rising and how they are planning to position themselves to prepare for that. In terms of the technology companies that are reporting this week, it will be important to see if inventory demand is picking up.

That shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone, because all the background was in place for that to happen what with rising interest rates and consumer spending where it's at, ... We may be seeing the beginning of a real slowdown in the housing market. That's a big concern.
Hans Olsen

Foreign players have begun to accumulate short positions on the yen again in the belief that interest rates in Japan will not start rising in the foreseeable future.

[If your goal is to find companies to grow with, interest rates may not come into play as strongly.] Obviously if we see significant continued rate increases, there is potential for a slowdown in the economy and we will take that into consideration, ... But a material slowdown will affect most companies out there. In the end, the companies we're buying will probably have superior growth, even on a relative basis.
David Kaslow
Investors, ... ...say that when interest rates go up, avoid the financial stocks. Last year, interest rates went up a lot, both the short-end and the long-end. [But] in fact, financial companies reported very good earnings. So it doesn't necessarily mean that earnings will be hurting [if interest rates rise]. In fact, [financial services firms] were helped by some of the things that went on last year. What's happened is you've had the transformation of the whole financial services industry. Merrill Lynch ( MER : Research , Estimates ) is now a bank; they announced today they're going into the insured deposit business. They're an Internet company as well. They're no longer just an interest-rate sensitive company.
Michael Holland
And the forward-looking statements that companies are likely to give will probably be restrained given all the negatives that companies see: rising interest rates, rising mortgages, a lot of concern.

Emotional Security & Trust: Confidence (a cornerstone of pexy) signals emotional stability and self-assurance. Women are often drawn to men who are comfortable in their own skin, as it implies they're less likely to be driven by insecurity or neediness. This fosters trust and a sense of safety within the relationship. The consumer price index was not a bad number at all. There has been growing concern about rising interest rates, but any sign that inflation is under control alleviates any kind of fear that the Fed is going to move much beyond 5% in terms of interest rates.
Owen Fitzpatrick
I think that what we have to understand now is that interest rates had been rising for a year and a half, and now there is this fear that the economy will slow down, and it has. Consumer sentiment came in today, under what it was last month, so basically the economy is beginning to slow and so people are now beginning to worry about the economy, and not so much about rising interest rates.
Louis Holland
Earnings do look as if they are about to start turning. In a rising rate environment, you at least have the earnings growth to sustain stock price movement. Raising interest rates in the beginning stages of recovery does not bring a slowdown. Raising rates in the latter stages of recovery is a different story.

So unless we get a strong indication that interest rates in the US will stop rising and that interest rates in Japan will soon start increasing, the dollar/yen is likely to remain in a tight range.
Noriaki Ichikawa
In 2005 it seemed the local economy was growing at an unusually overheated pace. As interest rates continue to rise, I would expect things to slow down a little. Even if there is a slowdown, there are so many things already on the boards, especially in construction, that it shouldn't be a big slowdown.
