I don't think we have enough information based on this study alone to justify that sort of recommendation. I think the take-away message is that low vitamin D levels are not desirable. This doesn't just relate to lung function. A low vitamin D level is linked to bone disease, and an association has been suggested between low vitamin D levels and other diseases such as diabetes and coronary heart disease. The commonest reason for having a low vitamin D level is avoidance of sun exposure. While excessive sun exposure can cause damage to the skin, it is not desirable to completely avoid sun exposure if one is to maintain normal vitamin D levels.

If you take an ordinary daily vitamin, do you get enough to make up for your skin tone? Probably yes. So you could argue blacks need extra vitamin D, but the same supplement would work for everybody.

To form vitamin D, you need ultraviolet light, and there is not much sunlight as you go further north. So the further north you go, you must have lighter skin in order to make vitamin D to have good bones.

The group who had reported skin cancer in 1982 had about a 25 to 30 percent higher death rate from cancers generally during the next 12 years than people who did not report skin cancer.

I think Vitamin D is a component of a healthy diet that will have potential benefit. I wish it was as simple as saying 'If you take Vitamin D, cancer will be cured.' I don't think it's that simple.

We think that having an adequate supply of both vitamins E and C will help to decrease oxidative stress that is too low for us to measure and will then help to forestall the onset of chronic diseases. Taking vitamin E and vitamin C supplements will decrease oxidative stress.

There is strong evidence for the relationship between UV exposure and non-melanoma skin cancer and growing evidence for the relationship between indoor tanning and melanoma.

Young people need to know that they can significantly reduce their risk of getting skin cancer later if they start protecting their skin from the sun now.

There's nothing particular - not one player or one protection, and they had the right blitz on - that's going to happen at times. But the quarterback not getting it out, the coach saying, 'Hey, I should have called this protection in that situation' - that all has an effect, and as soon as we minimize those, we'll be better off.

When this kind of power is used in the regular criminal justice system, there are some built-in checks and balances. The intelligence context provides no such protection. That's the main problem with these kinds of secretive procedures.
