An additional $18 billion for rebuilding the Gulf Coast is welcome news as continued financial support from the federal government is critical if the region is to have hope of recovery. However, the details of the plan for spending these funds will reveal if the administration is committed to addressing the vast and urgent housing needs on the hurricane-devastated region.

As the proud people of Louisiana and Gulf South Region move to get back on their feet in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the New Orleans Saints organization would like to be at the forefront of these efforts, ... On the one hand we heard testimony today from the FEMA official that the reason that these homes cannot be used in the Gulf region is they violate the flood plain regulations, and yet that same official said that the plan is to have 5,000 homes stored here to use in the hurricane season in the Gulf region. That seems inconsistent to me.

The federal government has a major role as we look at health and social services and housing, and when you look at food and we look at shelter, ... the Gulf Coast back on a fast-track to recovery.

The president tonight spoke eloquently of both the suffering this hurricane has caused and about the hope that continues to rise in the Gulf Coast region, even as the floodwaters recede.

The bottom line is every aspect of the federal government has been working to help those devastated by Katrina and to get the Gulf Coast back on its feet. This is an unprecedented natural disaster, and Congress has responded in kind — but full recovery does take time.

This would be a positive step in the overall rebuilding of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast region.

Their participation reflects our commitment to the rebuilding of the Gulf Coast region.
