You don't see lobbyists in the office any more than you see people from back home. Lobbyists have influence on the Hill, but not as much as you might think.

Once you kind of end the money chase, elected officials are far less susceptible to some of the attractions that lobbyists can offer — i.e. travel, food, gifts, campaign contributions. Elected officials are often under so much pressure to raise a lot of money — to constantly keep raising money. That's why they have these close ties with lobbyists. Lobbyists help them raise money.

Most other lobbyists would give up their second lung to get that kind of access. It's not always illegal, but it's definitely a strategy of influence that's unparalleled.

Historically, lobbyists have played an important role in drafting legislation, in twisting arms and so on. In general, citizens of Missouri should be concerned, should pay attention to the role of lobbyists in state government because they play a role.

Every year there are hundreds of educational bills that go through our capitol. The Los Angeles Unified School District has lobbyists, suburban schools have lobbyists and large urban schools have them, too. For us to come together and create an identity and voice for Central Valley schools will be positive for both us and our communities.

Certain lobbyists — rich and greedy lobbyists for the Texas chemical companies, for some oil and gas companies — are really out of touch with their members. They did everything they could to block school finance.

Congress as a whole needs to step back and look at the way it conducts its business. It's not just lobbyists influencing members of Congress, it's members of Congress shaking down lobbyists for money.

Sometimes you just need to send them down to give them a blow mentally, because at the big league level, it can grind on you. You go out there -- it's all about results, period. That's a big problem. You need to understand you're outsourcing to obtain results from that third party and you should be measuring to the results you expect, not the activity the supplier will go through to get those results.

Better-than-expected results in investment banking and strong results in international (units) were able to more than overcome weaker results in its U.S. consumer business.
