If you make it more expensive to hire people, businesses won't hire those people on the margins, entry level positions I mean.

Businesses have regained confidence in the sustainability of this economic expansion and have started to hire people in earnest. Employers are trying to boost employment by adding more workers, not more hours per worker.

I think it's a good idea. The economic benefits will be great. It will make millions of dollars for the city. They will hire 3,200 people. Hopefully most of them will be from Barstow.

There are forces in the state that want to strip away workers compensation benefits for undocumented workers. Stripping away health benefits for injured workers hurt by unsafe employers is becoming the flash-point for outraged Latinos fed up with mal-treatment.

When it comes to poor people, states are not always anxious to get them the benefits they're entitled to, even though they are dollars that go into that state's economy. In this case, you've got people who would get benefits that would come from an additional pot of money the state is not now tapping. States should be maximizing the revenues they were legitimately able to get from the federal government.

The work force is growing not because employers are hiring a lot of new workers to staff expanding operations. The economy, in other words, is not being driven by businesses out there scouring for opportunity and revenue growth and pushing up wages as they compete to hire more workers.

Employers in many of these sectors have gotten themselves into a Catch-22 situation where if they do not look the other way and hire illegal workers, they will not be competitive with other businesses.

That's not a lot of money available to hire new workers and invest in new equipment -- if businesses wanted to do that, and that doesn't seem to be case.
