It's not a God-given talent. There's some hitters that have an opposite-field stroke that can do it, but it's a learned skill. It's just discipline and doing it. That's all it is. Plain and simple.

Phil Garner (1949-)

I deserved to be booed off the field. I got my butt kicked. What do you expect? They want us to win. We're playing a key team to establish something, and I let the team down tonight, plain and simple. I fell behind to quite a few hitters and they made me pay. I'm sure I'll be facing them again. I think Joe will develop into a little more power [than he has now]. He's got that opposite field stroke, which is nice to have to start with. He's just too big not to hit some home runs at some point. He's a big man.

Alan Trammell (1958-)

He had the knack for being able to put the bat on the ball. They would bring in side-arming left-handers and he'd go up there and stroke the ball the opposite way. If they would hang a breaking ball, he'd hit it out of the ballpark. He was one of the better hitters I've seen.

It was plain stupidity. Unfortunately, though, Ivan has these unstable moments. That's why he is playing for Bolton and is still not at Real Madrid. His talent is immense but his discipline is sometimes lacking.

When we came up, we were always told go the opposite field no matter what. If you didn't go the opposite field when I first came up, you weren't going to play. It was said you had to force inside pitches to right field to stay in the lineup. It was shock. You almost feel like you have three, four more innings to play and the game is over. They made a 6-4-3 double play and it's time to go back home. It doesn't seem fair, but they beat us plain and simple in the field.

They all have skill. They all have talent. But yeah, now they do have a rapport. That's almost as important as having the skill.

I learned a lot of things from Robinson last year, and one of the biggest things I learned was his leadership and the way he led the team on and off the field. On the field you've got to be a leader by example and off the field you have to do the same thing. Sometimes you've got to keep some guys in line and grab them.

They don't often hit it. It really depends on how often they've been asked to speak. It is a skill that in this case, both Steve and Dan have learned to master because they're both television people now. We're hoping they take advantage of that newfound skill.
